Man City vs Real Madrid
City have been drawn against Real Madrid in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League quarterfinal.
It will be a rematch of last year’s semifinal in the quarterfinals as Manchester City will go head to head against the most successful side in the Champions League – Real Madrid.
The first leg will be played at the Bernabeu Stadium on April 9th, and the return match will be played at the Etihad Stadium on April 17th.
Should Pep Guardiola’s side progress past Madrid, we will face either Arsenal or Bayern Munich in the semifinals, which take place in May.
The two teams have met ten times, with City winning four, drawing three, and losing three.
Manchester City, the defending champions of the UEFA Champions League, will have good memories of last year’s clash heading into the quarterfinals.
City defeated Madrid over two legs in the semifinals on their way to victory in Istanbul last time, drawing 1-1 with Carlo Ancelotti’s team away from home before an astonishing home performance of 4-0 against the 14-time UCL winners.
It was a night that all fans with Champions League tickets will never forget.
Player of the Match Bernardo Silva bagged a brilliant brace allied to efforts from Manuel Akanji and Julian Alvarez in front of 52,313 fans with Champions League tickets.
Manchester City’s season so far has been smooth sailing. The team emerged on top in the group stage with maximum points and had a 6-2 aggregate win against FC Copenhagen in the Round of 16.
With the second leg 3-1 win against Copenhagen, the side was 30 Champions League games unbeaten at the Etihad, extending an English record in the competition to six matches better than Arsenal’s 24 from 2004-2009.
The result also meant that City had gone 22 games unbeaten home and away in Europe and emerged victorious in the last 10 Champions League matches, becoming the first English side to achieve that figure.
Now it’s on to the quarterfinals—the team’s seventh successive season reaching this point in the competition—as they look to move closer to London 2024 at Wembley Stadium.
Bayern Meets Arsenal
Bayern Munich is all set to meet Arsenal in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, and the footballing world is set to see great fixtures.
Speaking ahead of the fixture, CEO Jan Christian Dreesen added that it will be an even battle, with Arsenal being a top team in Europe.
Bayern have had a poor run in the Bundesliga this season, but their UEFA Champions League run has been great.
After speaking to the media after the draw, board member Max Eberl added that the team’s target is solely focused on the semifinals. Captain Manuel Neuer has the same mindset and added that the team is morally good enough to face Arsenal.
Sporting Director Christoph Freund adds that the Arsenal fixtures will be demanding yet attractive. He sees that the team is positively adopting and will have a real tester when they make the trip to the Emirates.
Manager Thomas Tuchel, who’s had a rather tough start to his managerial career by Bayern’s standards, adds that his team has the most challenging path to the finals.
Knowing the potential of Arsenal, Tuchel understands that it will be a tough match-up.
But he adds that his team will be ready and will give an even fight. Tuchel, having managed clubs in the Premier League, knows what to expect and hopes he can take his side to the semifinals in his first season in charge.
Players Confident of a Semi-final
Experienced campaigner and UEFA Champions League winner Manuel Neuer takes up the challenge in good spirits. He added that Arsenal is a great team, but his team will be ready.
“It’s going to be two hard games. We’ll have to show what we’re all about to progress. It will be an intriguing clash. We’re looking forward to the assignment and are happy we get to play in these games.”
Thomas Müller shared a similar statement, anticipating two great footballing fixtures in April when they play Arsenal.
“Arsenal are a team that’ll give us two thrilling games. They’re in good form at the moment. It’s a tough task, but with the second leg in Munich, we have good chances of progressing.”
For Bayern’s leading goalscorer and star player, Harry Kane, the Arsenal game is also more personal. Having played for Arsenal’s archrivals in London, Tottenham Hotspur, Kane has often been on the unfortunate side of affairs.
But a meeting against Arsenal in the Champions League, this time in a different jersey, will be something all English fans with Champions League tickets will anticipate. For Kane, winning the Champions League will be a tick in his long list of achievements. He almost secured the title in 2020 after taking the Spurs to the final.
No better player knows the Emirates conditions other than Kane, and if Bayern needs to win in London, Kane will need to score.
