Premier League 2023-24 Team of the Season
After another enthralling campaign full of drama, we present our Premier League Team of the Season for 2023/24. Check it out here….
The 2023-24 Premier League season was one of the most enthralling League campaigns, which saw the title decider go down until the final day.
There were outstanding individual performances, with players putting in relentless displays in their respective positions for their teams. From record-breaking debut seasons to unsung heroes who were standout performers despite their team’s disappointing campaigns, down to ever-present figures in defence and an unlikely but deserving Player of the Season winner, the 2023-24 season had it all in player performances.
Here’s a preview of the Premier League team of the season:
GK: David Raya
The Spain International raised eyebrows when he initially joined Arsenal on loan at the beginning of the season. Fast forward to the completion of the season, the goalkeeper has proved doubters wrong and silenced his critics while manning the post. In the tactical lens and quite a dissimilar theme to goalkeepers, Raya played a key role in Arsenal’s attacks often rolling out the ball far wide to a winger to set up a counter-attacking move. Arsenal finished the season as the team with the most goals from fast breaks with Raya’s quick rollouts playing a role in that.
The 28-year-old joined Wojciech Szczesny and Petr Cech to become the third Arsenal goalkeeper to win the Golden Glove after keeping 16 clean sheets in 31 Premier League matches last season.
RB: Ben White
The 26-year-old was ever present at Arsenal’s backline, featuring in 37 of the Gunners 38 matches. Despite being a natural centre-back, White displayed outstanding outlets and qualities of a modern-day full-back. He created 37 chances in the League from open play, the second-most by any fullback while scoring four goals and providing a further four assists.
LCB: William Saliba
An authoritative presence that marshalled Arsenal’s defence like an expert conductor. The France International featured in all of Arsenal’s games, becoming the first outfield player to feature in every minute for the Gunners in the Premier League. The Frenchman won the most possession 213 times, more than any player in the League last season. He also won 72 of his contested 121 Ariel fuels and was a key component of Arsenal’s impressive defensive record where they conceded only 29 goals.
RCB: Manuel Akanji
Akanji was a pivotal figure for Guardiola’s record-breaking season and his performances were key to City’s defensive record. The Switzerland International was a versatile asset for the Cityzens where he featured across all positions in City’s backline. With City’s penchant for keeping the ball, Akanji recorded a 93.8% passing accuracy according to Opta’s statistics while also regaining possession 5.1 times per 90 minutes. Fans with Man City tickets won’t be surprised by Akanji’s inclusion in our Team of the Season given how consistent he was for the champions.
LB: Alfie Doughty
Perhaps the most unpopular player on the list, Doughty has been one of the brightest sparks in Luton’s underwhelming but impressive season. The 24-year-old utilised his wand of a left foot to provide pinpoint crosses for Luton Town last campaign. Out of Luton’s overall 842 crosses, Doughty alone orchestrated 340 crosses, the most by any player in the Premier League.
Since displacing Ryan Giles at the left-back position, the winger-turned-fullback has produced impressive numbers and played a big role in Luton’s 52 goals scored in the League last season. His eight assists are the most by any left-back in the League and the second-most by a defender after Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier (10).
DM: Rodri
City’s pulse-generator had another metronomic campaign at the base of Pep Guardiola’s midfield. Despite playing in the defensive midfield position, the Spaniard was the only player in the Premier League to record 20+ hots on target, 20+ chances created, and 20+ take-ons completed. He also topped the League standings with over 20 tackles, interceptions, clearances, fouls and aerial duels won. He also topped his meteoric performances with eight goals and nine assists to ensure his fourth Premier League title.
CM: Bruno Guimaraes
The 26-year-old was one of the brightest sparks for Newcastle United last season, maintaining high-level performances in a season that was plagued by injuries to his side. He featured in all but one of the Magpies’ 37 matches last season, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists. The 26-year-old won the most duels(285), the most possession (236) and the most fouls (108) than any other player in the just-concluded Premier League season.
AMF: Martin Ødegaard
The Gunners skipper had another impeccable campaign and was unlucky to lose the title to City on the final day. Like every other Arsenal player, the 25-year-old produced high-level performances and had an all-round role in nearly all facets of Arsenal’s game plan. From build-up to pressing, to creating chances, to converting chances, the Norwegian was at the heart of it all.
While being a creative outlet for his team, the 25-year-old also played a pivotal role in helping Arsenal win back the ball and retain possession.
Only Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes(114) and Brighton’s Pascal Groß (103) created more chances than the Gunners captain(102).
RW: Cole Palmer
Incredible debut seasons don’t come as good as this as the 22-year-old unleashed immense potential in the recently concluded season. No player in the league had more goal contributions than Palmer with 22 goals and 11 assists. The youngster broke Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink’s record for most goal contributions in a debut season, while also equalling Frank Lampard’s most goal contributions in a single season. Palmer also set the record for the earliest ever ‘perfect hat-trick’ within 29 minutes in the 6:0 win over Everton, breaking the 29-year record that was set in 1995.
He also became just the third Chelsea player to record 20+ goals and provide 10+ assists in a single Premier League campaign after Frank Lampard( 22 goals and 14 assists) and Didier Drogba ( 29 goals and 10 assists).
Palmer’s incredible performances earned him a deserved Premier League Young Player of the Season award where he made 33 goal contributions in 34 matches in the competition.
LW: Phil Foden
With 17 trophy accolades, safe to say that Foden at 23, has ‘won it all’. He also became the youngest player to win six Premier League titles. He scored 19 goals and provided eight assists last campaign. Six of his goals were stunning curlers from outside the box.
Foden finished the campaign as the competitions fourth-highest goalscorer – only behind, Erling Haaland (27), Cole Palmer (22) and Alexander Isak (21).
The 2023-24 campaign will always be a special one for the England International who put up jaw-dropping performances that earned him the Premier League Player of the Season Award.
CF: Erling Haaland
Another season, another title, another golden boot, and another record – the Norwegian just doesn’t look to stop!
Haaland once again topped the goalscorers chart with 27 goals to became the first-ever Premier League player to win consecutive League titles along with the Golden Boot. The 23-year-old has now won as many Golden Boots as some of the Premier League greats – including Robin van Persie, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Michael Owen and Dider Drogba (2).
