Chelsea’s struggles continue with defeat to Brighton

Chelsea endured a frustratingly familiar defeat as Brighton secured a dominant 3-0 victory in the Premier League at the Amex Stadium.
Just six days after being knocked out of the FA Cup at the same venue, Enzo Maresca’s side suffered another heavy loss which could damage their hopes of securing a Champions League spot. The Blues have currently lost Nicolas Jackson to injury and failed to secure a consistent and experienced center forward in the January transfer window to boost their attacking options.
Brighton took the lead in the 27th minute through Kaoru Mitoma, who controlled the ball brilliantly before firing into the net. Yankuba Minteh then scored twice – once before halftime and again after the break to seal a comfortable win for the home side at the Annex Stadium.
Chelsea’s night went from bad to worse as Noni Madueke was forced off early due to injury. They also failed to register a single shot on target and have now earned just nine points from their last nine league matches. Meanwhile, Brighton bounced back in style from their recent 7-0 thrashing at Nottingham Forest, climbing to eighth place with their first home league win since early November.
Despite the disappointing result, Maresca suggested that being able to focus on the Premier League and Conference League was a silver lining after Chelsea’s early FA Cup exit. As Chelsea continued their push for a return to the Champions League, head coach Enzo Maresca made four changes to the lineup that lost to Brighton in the FA Cup six days earlier. Meanwhile, Brighton replaced their injured captain, Lewis Dunk, with Adam Webster.
One of Chelsea’s changes saw Noni Madueke return to the starting lineup. However, his night was cut short when he suffered an injury just 21 minutes into the game. England boss Thomas Tuchel watched from the stands as Madueke was forced off and replaced by Jadon Sancho. Before his injury, Madueke had set up a promising chance for Cole Palmer, but Palmer sliced his shot wide in what was the best opening of a tight first half.
The breakthrough came spectacularly in the 27th minute. Brighton’s goalkeeper, Bart Verbruggen, launched a long pass forward, which Kaoru Mitoma expertly controlled with an exquisite first touch. The Japanese winger then dribbled past Trevoh Chalobah before drilling a powerful shot into the bottom right corner from just outside the penalty area.
Chelsea thought they had equalized 10 minutes before halftime when Enzo Fernández headed in a cross from Malo Gusto. However, the goal was disallowed because Fernández was penalized for pushing Brighton defender Joel Veltman.
The visitors’ frustration only grew three minutes later after another defensive mistake led to Brighton’s second goal. Chalobah lost possession deep in Chelsea’s half, putting his team under immediate pressure. Filip Jorgensen made a crucial save to prevent Levi Colwill from accidentally turning Georginio Rutter’s cross into his onet, but the ball fell to Danny Welbeck. Welbeck quickly passed to Yankuba Minteh, who controlled the ball, got past Marc Cucurella, and slotted a low shot past the goalkeeper to double Brighton’s lead.
Throughout the match, Brighton’s fans made their feelings clear toward Chelsea’s former Seagulls players. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, left-back Marc Cucurella, and midfielder Moisés Caicedo all faced hostility from the home crowd. Sanchez had been dropped in favor of Jorgensen, but Cucurella in particular was heavily booed. The Brighton fans even chanted “Can we play you every week?” after their team’s second goal. Caicedo, who had left Brighton for Chelsea in a big-money transfer, further angered the crowd when he made a rough challenge on Mitoma, earning himself a yellow card.
Despite having more possession in the first half, Chelsea struggled to create real chances and failed to test Verbruggen. With first-choice striker Nicolas Jackson still injured and Madueke now sidelined, Maresca decided not to make any substitutions at halftime, instead sending his players out early for the second half.
Chelsea continued to see a lot of the ball, but their lack of attacking threat remained a major problem. Brighton took full advantage and put the game beyond doubt in the 63rd minute. While Chelsea’s players were appealing for a foul on Colwill in the buildup, Minteh combined with Welbeck before cutting inside from the right and firing a shot that took a slight deflection off Chalobah on its way into the net.
Maresca made three substitutions in response, but by then, the damage was done. Brighton could have added to their lead, with Jorgensen making an important save to push a Veltman shot onto the post. The home side did have a brief scare when Verbruggen had to prevent his own teammate, Adam Webster, from scoring an own goal. However, Brighton ultimately cruised to an emphatic 3-0 victory, while Chelsea were left to reflect on another disappointing night.
