Villas-Boas Praises Old Squad But Is Looking To Youth
Andrea Villas-Boas admits he needs to find the right balance of youth and experience within his squad.
Premiership rival Sir Alex Ferguson believes Villa-Boas inherited an aging squad, but the young tactician denies that the club will struggle to compete on all fronts next season.
“These players still have a lot to offer,” said the Portuguese tactician following Chelsea’s 4-0 victory over the Thailand All Stars in the latest leg of their pre-season tour of Asia.
“Just look at the trophies they have won and how successful they have been.
“Chelsea are the second or third oldest team in the Premier League and I must respect the recovery periods of the older players.
“So I must find the correct balance between experience and youth and find out what kind of game we can play.”
Nine of the senior squad are in their thirties and Villa-Boas has identified a number of younger players to eject much needed youth into the team.
