It has been reported that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will bid for Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina in the summer if (when) Liverpool fail to qualify for the champions league next year.
The report claimed Wenger was weighing up options for Arsenal’s new No1 after the indifferent form of Almunia and Fabianski this season, and Reina was top of his wish list. It is ‘understood’ that Arsene was ready take advantage of Liveprool’s financial position, which will worsen without the revenue generated by champions league action.
Now, i would absolutely love it if Arsene Wenger was even considering going for a player like Reina. He is experienced, has played in the premiership for years, at 27 is a good age and is a world class goalkeeper.
But seriously, do the papers actually think people will believe this rubbish? Pepe Reina?! Wenger would never pay what would be required to buy him, Liverpool wouldn’t sell him to us, Reina only just signed a new 5-year contract, and his family all love it in Liverpool and are very settled. If Reina was ever to leave Liverpool, it wouldn’t be to Arsenal or any other English club, he would most likely return to Spain.
So sorry Arsenal fans, you can rip that one up and throw it in the bin because it’s never going to happen. But after watching Joe Hart’s performance in the Birmingham v Villa game yesterday, i hope the rumours of Wenger’s interest in him are true. He made several superb saves and is definitely better than what we’ve got. But Wenger said all the recent transfer rumours were rubbish, so i won’t get my hopes up on that one either. Although it’s FAR more likely that Pepe Reina!
