Per Mertesacker Provides Injury Update….
Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker has given an update on his injury and is confident he’ll be back in time to play for Germany in the European Championships this summer
Arsenal’s latest long-term injury victim, Per Mertesacker, has given an update on his injury and is confident he’ll be back in time to play for Germany in the European Championships this summer.
The giant centre back was forced off during Arsenal’s 2-1 Premier League win over Sunderland last weekend and it was clear from video replays that Per had done some serious damage to his ankle.
Arsene Wenger confirmed recently that the injury was “long term” (source: Telegraph) and judging by the players comments on his official Facebook page today, it’s highly unlikely we’ll see Mertesacker in the Red & White again this season.
“My participation in Euro 2012 is not in danger. Dr Stöckle in Tübingen did the operation on Tuesday evening, attached a piece of bone back to the ankle and patched up the deltoid ligament on the inside of the ankle.
“All went well and I’m in Donaustauf, Bavaria, for the physical rehabilitation.” Mertesacker said on his Facebook page.
Now i’m no expert on these types of things, but that sounds like a serious bit of surgery he’s had done there! Reattaching some bone and patching up his ligament?! Not good.
I suppose if all goes well he could make the final few games of the season but we all know how injuries go at Arsenal. 4 weeks turns in to 8 weeks, before a set back makes it 12 weeks, and so on. Of course i hope he makes a quick recovery, but i’d be surprised to see him back this season, but the player seems confident he’ll be ok for the Euro’s.
