Tottenham Hotspur have turned down a bid of £38m from Real Madrid for Luka Modric putting the proposed transfer in jeopardy, according to the Daily Mail.
Jose Mourinho has made the Croatian his number one summer transfer target but the Spaniards are becoming tired of Tottenham’s hardline approach after seeing three bids rejected by chairman Daniel Levy.
The Mail claim Madrid’s latest offer was £30m up front with a further £8m paid over the course of Modric’s contract, but Levy once again turned it down insisting he wont settle for anything less than the £40m asking price.
The La Liga champions are now believed to be growing frustrated at the lack of movement from Tottenham’s side and have told the Londoners they will now start to look at other targets.
Their threat to end talks could simply be a negotiating ploy but this transfer saga shows no signs of a conclusion any time soon, with Spurs adament the Croatian will remain in north London if their asking price isn’t met, despite the fact the 26-year-old is desperate for a move to Real.
Andre Villas-Boas and his squad fly back to London today after completing their pre-season tour of American with a 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls last night, and the Portuguese boss will be keen for a quick resolution to the Modric saga ahead of the new season, that’s just over 2 weeks away.
