Belgian Defender Open To Liverpool Move But United Ready To Pounce
Liverpool have been boosted in their attempts to land Toby Alderweireld after the Ajax defender admitted he’d be open to moving to Anfield at the end of the season
Despite the transfer window being closed there is still plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Toby Alderweireld is open to a move to Liverpool.
Liverpool have been boosted in their attempts to land Toby Alderweireld after the Ajax defender revealed he’d be open to moving to Anfield this summer, according to the Express.
The highly-rated Belgian international has been with Ajax his entire senior career and has become at the Amsterdam Arena regular since breaking into the first team in 2008.
Alderweireld has been in superb form in the Eredivisie this season helping Ajax stay on course to claiming the Dutch title and it seems his form hasn’t gone unnoticed here in England with the Express claiming the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Everton are all tracking the 24-year-old.
The versatile defender, who can play centre-back or right-back, has now opened the door to a potential switch to Anfield after admitting Liverpool meet the criteria he’s looking for in a new club:
“I do not want to play in an English club to mid-table. Unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meets my criteria.” Alderweireld is quoted as saying by the Express
The report suggests Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is on the look-out for a new defender due to concerns over the long-term future of Martin Skrtel while Jamie Carragher is set to retire at the end of the season and Alderweireld appears to be on his radar.
However, the Merseysiders could still face stiff competition for the defenders signature with the Express claiming United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has identified him as a potential replacement for Nemanja Vidic, with Ajax understood to be willing to cash in for around £8m.
