Man Utd Pre-Chelsea Team News & Injury Update: Welbeck, Vidic & Scholes

Manchester United welcome rivals Chelsea to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. Here is a boss Sir Alex Ferguson’s team news and injury update for the big game.

Scholes: Back in contention

Manchester United welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon with the visitors desperate for points as they continue to chase a top-four finish this season.

The Reds head into the gave safe in the knowledge their 20th league title is in the bag but Sir Alex Ferguson will be keen for his side to finish the season strongly, despite having very little left to play for.

The United boss has been in front of the media on Friday morning for his pre-match press conference and has given ManUtd.com a team news and injury update with the latest on Danny Welbeck, Paul Scholes and Nemanja Vidic’s fitness.

The bad news is that striker Welbeck has been ruled out of Sunday’s clash with a knee problem picked up in training this week. However, there is better news concerning captain Vidic who is back in training after missing last weeks draw with Arsenal at the Emirates.

Ferguson also confirmed that midfielder Scholes is also back in training and in contention to feature for the first time since picking a knee injury against Fulham back in January. Fergie will start Scholes form the bench this weekend but hopes he can start the United legend against Swansea for their final home game of the season.

Here is what Ferguson told the clubs official website:

“Welbeck is out of Sunday. The rest are all fit. Scholes and Vidic are training and I’ll probably put Scholes on the bench on Sunday to get him back into the fray. I’d love him to play in the Swansea game.

“We did pretty well at Arsenal last weekend and should’ve won it with the chances we had. Chelsea are chasing a Champions League place as well and we’ll be playing the strongest team we can.

“Chelsea have done fantastically well over the last few weeks and they are in the final of the Europa League. It should be a good game. We need to play with good enthusiam and enjoy it. We should express ourselves and try to finish off a good season.”
