Spurs head into the final weekend sitting in fifth place after Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Wigan and they must now rely on their north London rivals dropping points away at Newcastle if they’re to clinch that all-important Champions League place.
Boss Andre Villas-Boas has given his pre-match press conference on Friday morning and gave TottenhamHotspur.com a team news and injury update. AVB confirmed the good news that left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto is back in contention after missing last weeks win over Stoke with a knee problem.
He’s back in training and is likely to come straight back in to the side at left-back on Sunday with Jan Vertonghen moving back into the middle of defence.
“Benoit is training with team and back in contention.” Villas-Boas told the clubs website
Spurs will continue to be without long-term injury victims Sandro, Younes Kaboul and William Gallas for the game.
Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio has a void to fill at left-back with Danny Rose unable to play against his parent club; Jack Colback is expected to be the man to step in.
Striker Stephane Sessegnon continues to be out as he serves the final game of his three-match ban while midfielder Craig Gardner is also suspended as he serves the second game of his own three match ban. Di Canio continues to be without Steven Fletcher however Connor Wickham is back in contention after recovering from a calf problem.
