Alex Ferguson could not replace Paul Scholes and David Moyes is finding out the hard way that the irreplaceable midfielder really is irreplaceable.
Manchester United have been the quietest of the top clubs in transfer market, much to the annoyance of their fans. David Moyes, the new manager, is all too aware of the fans’ misgivings about the lack of transfer activity. Moyes needs to stamp his authority on the squad and sign a top quality midfielder before the transfer window slams shut.
Last season United did win the Premier League, yet, their lack of quality in central midfield was clear to all who saw the team play. The search still continues for Paul Scholes’s long term successor. Manchester United do have many fine midfielders. Michael Carrick had a fantastic season last term, yet he lacks the vision and flair that Paul Scholes possessed. Kagawa showed much promise during an injury ravaged season, but the Japanese international looks more comfortable and effective playing behind a striker rather than as an orthodox central midfielder. Tom Cleverly, 23, is improving the more he plays but needs time to fulfil his potential. Anderson, hugely talented, is too injury prone to be depended to hold down a regular midfield starting spot. Time and patience are also running out for the Brazilian at Old Trafford.
Moyes wants to sign Cesc Fabregas, 26, to bolster his midfield and solve the problematic area and there’s talk of a third and final bid going in. The Barcelona ace possess all the qualities that any top quality midfielder must have. He is technically brilliant, has a keen eye for a pass and scores plenty of goals playing in central midfield. Barcelona understandably, are reluctant to sell. Thiago Alcantara departed Barcelona to join Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich and Xavi is entering the final stages of his glittering career.
Fabregas is the calibre of player that Moyes so badly wants to sign. If he manages to sign the Catalan ace, it would be a major coup for the United manager. The capture of Cesc Fabregas would also send out a huge signal of intent to their rivals for the forthcoming season as the post Ferguson era’s begins.
Alex Ferguson had the ability to sign the best players in the world when he was United’s manager. The question is now posed of David Moyes.
