Mourinho On Interest In Wayne Rooney And Samuel Eto’o
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has responded to questions over his interest in Wayne Rooney and Samuel Eto’o and also insisted that David Luiz wont be leaving.
With the summer transfer window in full swing, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Jose Mourinho confirms he’s still interested in Wayne Rooney.
Jose Mourinho has been in front of the media on Friday afternoon for his first competitive pre-match press conference since returning to Stamford Bridge this summer.
The Portuguese coach returned to west London after leaving the club six years ago and was speaking to the press ahead of this weekend’s Premier League opener against Hull City.
The 50-year-old was asked for an update on his pursuit of Wayne Rooney after Manchester United had previously rejected his bid for the striker while he was also quizzed about reported interest in Cameroonian hitman Samuel Eto’o.
The Anzhi Makhachkala striker was quoted as saying earlier in the week that he’d be keen to link up with Mourinho again at Chelsea having enjoyed an excellent relationship during their time together at Inter Milan, with the player one of several high earners who’ve been made available for transfer this summer by the big-spending Russian outfit.
The former Real Madrid man remained coy on his interest in Rooney, simply reiterating that he is only looking to sign ‘one player’ – having previously declared that Rooney was the only player he was interested in buying this summer – but he expressed his pleasure that Eto’o wants to work with him again.
Mourinho told the Daily Mail:
‘We always say we are happy with our squad, but we lie, because we always want to improve. I like the squad. I’m not lying when I say that.’
‘I’m happy a player who worked with me before says he wants to join me again, especially one like Samuel, but we are trying to get one player and we will see what happens.’
The Chelsea boss also insisted that defender David Luiz would not be sold this summer amid reported interest from Barcelona. He added:
‘We are being very honest by saying there is no chance David Luiz is leaving’
So it seems Mourinho still has hopes of luring Rooney to the Bridge but time is running out to get a deal done. There is little over 17 days left until the window slams shut and United are adamant they wont be selling the striker this summer. It’s going to be in interesting few days, let’s see what happens…
