Tottenham Hotspur kick off the new season at newly promoted Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon and boss Andre Villas-Boas has given the clubs official website a team news and injury update.

The Spurs supremo gave the latest on Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen, new summer signing Etienne Capoue, as well as Lewis Holtby and Gareth Bale.

Vertonghen picked up an ankle injury while playing a re-season friendly against Sunderland in the Asia Trophy last month and initial fears were that he could be out of action for some time. However, AVB has revealed that the centre-back is making good progress and will be assessed on Saturday, with the player having a slight chance of making the trip to Selhurst Park.

Capoue only joined the club this week and was away on international duty with France in midweek but Villas-Boas claims he’s looking good in training and is expected to join fellow new-comers Paulinho, Nacer Chadli and Roberto Soldado in the squad this weekend.

Villas-Boas told TottenhamHotspur.com:

“Let’s wait and see on Jan. He’s made good progress so there is a small chance he could make the squad.”

“He’s looking extremely good. He only played 20 minutes for France so he was able to train fully today and he did very well. There have been some good signs from him.”

Tottenham’s official website also claims that the boss confirmed that Gareth Bale remains out with a foot injury and is unlikely to play again this month while midfielder Lewis Holtby is also still on the sidelines with a knee complaint.

Now we’ve seen the team news, what would be your starting line-up for the game this weekend?
