Chelsea To Target Lewandowski If Final £40m Rooney Bid Fails
Chelsea are ready to switch their attention to Robert Lewandowski if a final £40m bid for Wayne Rooney is rejected by Manchester United, according to the Mirror
With the summer transfer window in full swing, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Chelsea are preparing a final £40m bid for Rooney.
Chelsea are ready to switch their attention to Robert Lewandowski if a final £40m bid for Wayne Rooney is rejected by Manchester United, according to the Mirror.
Rooney’s future at Old Trafford has come under the spotlight after former boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that the striker had asked to leave the club towards the end of last season. Chelsea have not hidden their desire to take the 27-year-old to Stamford Bridge this summer and have already seen a £22m offer rejected by the champions last month.
The Mirror claim that Jose Mourinho is ready to test United’s resolve further and go in with a final £40m bid within the next 48 hours, with owner Roman Abramovich ready to back his manager and by offering the striker a bumper four-year contract.
Rooney has just two years left to run on his current deal at Old Trafford and he’s highly unlikely to sign an extension if he’s kept at the club against his will, so financially it would make sense to cash in as his value will decrease drastically next summer.
But selling the striker to Chelsea – a main title rival – would be regarded as suicide in United’s attempt to retain the Premier League trophy so it leave David Moyes in a tricky situation.
If United insist Rooney will not be sold this summer, the newspaper suggests that Mourinho will then turn his attention to Borussia Dortmund hitman Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker has just one year left on his contract and is prepared to run it down to force a move to Bayern Munich after Dortmund refused to sell to their bitter rivals.
Dortmund would find it difficult to turn down a sizeable bid from a foreign club as they know they’ll lose him for nothing next summer and Chelsea know that Lewandowski has his heart set on a move to the Allianz Arena but the Mirror claim they hope the promise of a huge deal may tempt him to make the move to west London.
Mourinho confirmed after Sunday’s 2-0 win over Hull that he will work until the last day of the transfer window to try and bring in another striker to his squad, but refused to be drawn on names.
“But in this moment, every striker has a club. Every striker belongs to somebody. And I don’t think it’s ethical I name players who belong to other clubs.
“If we have to make a bid, we make it in an official way. We don’t speak to players, but to clubs.
“We don’t try to influence players to behave in a certain way, as other clubs do. We behave in the correct manner and we’ll try for that until the last day of the transfer window.” Mourinho’s quoted as saying in the Mirror.
