Chelsea Hoping To Beat Man Utd To Spanish Defender With £20m Bid
Chelsea are hoping to beat Manchester United to the signature of Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno by opening the bidding with a £20million offer in January
Although the summer transfer window is officially closed that doesn’t stop clubs working hard behind the scenes to prepare for future signings, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest gossip. Today, Chelsea hoping to beat Man Utd to Alberto Moreno.
Chelsea are hoping to beat Manchester United to the signature of Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno by opening the bidding with a £20m offer when the transfer window re-opens in January, according to the Mirror.
The report claims that the Blues are on the look-out for a long-term replacement for Ashley Cole – who turns 33 next month – and have identified the Sevilla star as the ideal man for the job.
Cole’s form has dipped in recent weeks and Jose Mourinho has axed him from his starting eleven for the clubs last two fixtures, preferring to play Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back, casting doubt over the England defender’s future at the club.
The newspaper suggests that Roman Abramovich is ready to open his chequebook once again this winter and is prepared to table an offer in excess of £20m for Moreno – who has a £25m buy-out clause in his current contract.
However, the west Londoners will not have a clear run at the 21-year-old with the report stating that Manchester Unite and Real Madrid are also keen on the Spanish youngster and may rival for is signature in January as David Moyes looks to buy a long-term replacement for Patrice Evra.
Should Chelsea pull-off the signing, it would spell bad news for Cole’s chances of winning his battle with Leighton Baines to be England’s first choice left-back at next summers World Cup.
Moreno is eligible to play in this seasons Champions League so Cole wouldn’t even have the guarantee of playing Chelsea’s European fixtures and Hodgson would be highly unlikely to pick the veteran if he wasn’t playing week-in week-out in the run up to the competition.
