Chelsea Lining-Up Fresh Bid For Wayne Rooney After United Snub Contract Talks
Chelsea are ready to renew their interest in Wayne Rooney after it emerged that Man Utd have no plans to open talks with the striker over a contract extension
Although the summer transfer window is officially closed that doesn’t stop clubs working hard behind the scenes to prepare for future signings, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest gossip. Today, Chelsea are ready to go back in for Wayne Rooney.
Chelsea are ready to renew their interest in Wayne Rooney after it emerged that Manchester United have no plans to open talks with the striker over a contract extension, according to the Mirror.
Rooney was strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer with Jose Mourinho publicly admitting the England hitman was his prime transfer target. The champions were adamant the 28-year-old would not be sold though and rejected Chelsea’s final offer of £24m – with the Blues seemingly unwilling to go beyond that figure until Rooney went public with his desire to leave.
The former Everton ace wasn’t willing to do so and therefore stayed at Old Trafford where’s he’s rediscovered his best form under David Moyes, scoring 10 goals in 19 games this season.
However, the Mirror claims today that Mourinho is ready to renew his interest next summer after learning that United have made no attempts to open talks with the striker over a contract extension.
Rooney’s current deal has just 18 months left to run but it’s understood that United have not held any talks over a possible extension and none are scheduled for the foreseeable future.
This leaves Rooney’s long-term future up in the air and United risk being forced to cash-in on the striker next summer when he will have just one year remaining on his contract, as this will be the last time the champions would be able to command a decent fee for his services unless they tie him down to new terms.
Ironically, this would be a similar position as Arsenal were in when they were forced to sell Robin van Persie to Man Utd, and we could see the same happen with Rooney to Chelsea next summer if things don’t change.
Mourinho’s need for a striker is clear with his current trio of forward’s all struggling this season, but it seems he’ll have to wait until the end of the current campaign before making any move for Rooney as there is virtually no chance a deal could be done mid-season with United suffering a nightmare start in the league under Moyes.
