Chelsea Ready To Sell Juan Mata To United For £40m With Player ‘Desperate’ For Move
Widespread reports this morning are suggesting that Chelsea are ready to sell Juan Mata to Manchester United if they pay £40m for the unsettled attacker.
With the January transfer window in full flow clubs are working hard to try and strengthen their squad for the second half of the season, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, could Man Utd finally land Juan Mata?
The transfer window could be set to heat-up with the widespread reports this morning suggesting that Chelsea are ready to sell Juan Mata to Manchester United if they pay £40m for the unsettled attacker.
Mata has surprisingly fallen out-of-favour at Chelsea this season with boss Jose Mourinho preferring the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian in attack, leading to speculation he could be on the move this month.
The Daily Mail are one of several newspapers who are reporting today that despite weeks of denying they will sell the Spaniard, the Blues are now willing to cash-in and sell to United as long as the champions meet their £40m valuation.
The Telegraph are also running a similar story but they feel the fee has been set at nearer £37m. Either way, it looks like this sensational deal could be on the cards if United are willing to pay.
The newspapers agree that David Moyes is keen to take Mata to Old Trafford and while the club have not made an official offer as yet, it’s suggested they are on the brink of making their move with the 25-year-old said to be ‘desperate’ to leave in order to resurrect his career ahead of the World Cup. Any potential deal could still be complicated by Chelsea interest in Wayne Rooney, but it appears United remain adamant the striker won’t be sold.
It would certainly be a major coup if United could pull this deal off and hand Moyes a huge boost in what’s been a difficult first season in charge since replacing Sir Alex Ferguson. The defending champions fell 14 points off the pace in the title race after losing 3-1 to Chelsea at the Bridge on Sunday and there’s little doubt they need to inject some fresh blood, and the signing of Mata could be just what they need to get back on track.
The Spaniard’s fall from grace at Chelsea has been both dramatic and surprising. He was named as the club’s player of the year for the previous two seasons before Mourinho returned to consign him to a bit-part role, with the Portuguese coach questioning the attackers work-rate and ability to track back and help out in defence when needed.
Mata hasn’t featured since reacting badly to being an early substitute in Chelsea’s win over Southampton on New Year’s Day, and Mourinho revealed after the game that the ‘door was open’ for him if he wanted to leave.
I think it’s certainly come to a point where Mata should be pushing for a move as he’s far too good a player to be warming the bench every week – particularly in a World Cup year – but I’d also be majorly surprised if Chelsea did agree to sell to United.
The Red Devils may not be viewed as title contenders anymore this season but they are still a domestic rival and Chelsea would be severely strengthening them not only for the second half of this season, but also for the seasons to come.
However, the media seems certain that a deal can be agreed if Chelsea’s valuation is met, so let’s see how this develops over the coming days. United fans might finally have something to smile about this season…
