Still Hope For Liverpool As Brendan Rodgers Casts Doubt On Chelsea’s Salah Deal
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has cast doubt on Mohamed Salah’s proposed move to Chelsea and suggests he’s not given up hope of luring the attacker to Anfield.
With the January transfer window in full flow clubs are working hard to try and strengthen their squad for the second half of the season, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, could Mohamed Salah still join Liverpool?
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has cast doubt on Mohamed Salah’s proposed move to Chelsea and suggests he’s not yet given up hope of luring the attacker to Anfield.
Speaking exclusively on talkSPORT this morning, Rodgers admitted that he has been tracking Salah for several months and reports earlier this week suggested that Liverpool were close to agreeing a £10m deal with FC Basel for the attackers signature.
Chelsea then entered the chase and it seemed like they had gazumped the Merseysiders when they announced on Thursday that they had come to an agreement worth in the region of £11m with the Swiss champions, and Salah is due to arrive in the UK on Friday to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms at Stamford Bridge.
However, Rodgers has cast doubt over whether the move is a ‘done deal’ and suggests that he hasn’t given up hope of Liverpool making a late hijack attempt. When asked if he was disappointed that Salah was heading to Chelsea, Rodgers told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show:
“I’m not sure whether that deal is definitely done yet or not.
“The young guy is a good player. We have tracked him for a number of months, the club has been watching him and I have been to watch him.
“It is one where the agent of the player and the clubs were talking but if the deal can’t be done, the deal can’t be done.
“I know the club has been working very hard to get players in. I’ll leave that to them and see how they get on.”
“He’s a boy that is a talent. He is 21 years of age and people saw his qualities in the games against Chelsea and Tottenham in Europe, but you need to have that list because if it doesn’t work out then you are hoping there are one or two others,”
Could Liverpool ‘do a Chelsea’, on Chelsea?! The Blues famously pulled off a last minute hijack on Tottenham’s move for Willian last summer when they persuaded the Brazilian to join them even though the player had already agreed personal terms and undergone a medical at Spurs.
It certainly sound’s like Rodgers isn’t convinced the deal is dead just yet and nothing is certain until the player has signed his contract and is photographed holding his new shirt.
Obviously Chelsea remain the odds on favourites to sign the Egyptian international but perhaps there is still some hope for Liverpool fans that they could pull this off and persuade the youngster to opt for Anfield? Let’s see how this progresses, we could be in store for an exciting Friday afternoon….
