Man Utd Outbid Chelsea For England Starlet With £22.5m Offer
Man Utd’s spending spree looks set to continue with David Moyes outbidding Chelsea with a £22.5m offer for Southampton’s highly-rated left-back Luke Shaw.
With the January transfer window in full flow clubs are working hard to try and strengthen their squad for the second half of the season, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Man Utd make their move for Luke Shaw.
Manchester United’s spending spree looks set to continue with David Moyes outbidding Chelsea with a £22.5m offer for Southampton’s highly-rated left-back Luke Shaw, according to the Mirror.
Shaw has been in excellent form since breaking into the Saints first team last season and is being tipped by many as a future England international having already represented his country at Under-17 and Under-21 level.
His composed displays at the back have attracted interest from the upper echelons of the Premier League and the Mirror are now reporting that United have topped Chelsea’s previous £21m bid with a £22.5m offer for the 18-year-old.
The newspaper suggests that David Moyes is keen on holding formal talks this weekend and is prepared to offer the teenager the chance to immediately become United’s first choice left-back as well as offer him a lucrative long-term contract.
Patrice Evra currently occupies the left-back slot at Old Trafford but has just five months left on his contract and there have been no signs that he’ll be signing an extension any time soon.
It was initially thought that United would wait until the summer before trying to fill the void if Evra did leave but it appears Moyes has decided to act early to try and beat Chelsea to Shaw’s signature and it prepared to oust Evra from his first team plans in order to lure the talented defender to Old Trafford.
Southampton have previously insisted they will resist any attempts to prize Shaw away from St Mary’s, but the report suggests the south coast club will be prepared to sell if the price is right and it will surely be difficult for them to turn down an offer in excess of £20m for a player that cost them nothing and came through their youth ranks.
However, Shaw is known to be a Chelsea fan and the Blues have uncertainties at left-back themselves with Ashley Cole’s future still up-in-the-air so I wouldn’t rule out Jose Mourinho’s men just yet.
