Liverpool Eye Summer Move For Chelsea Outcast
Chelsea outcast Ashley Cole could turn down a lucrative move to the MLS and link up with former Blues coach Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool this summer.
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, could Ashley Cole move to Liverpool?
Chelsea outcast Ashley Cole could turn down a lucrative move to the MLS and link up with former Blues coach Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool this summer, according to the Mirror.
The 33-year-old is out-of-contract at the end of the season and is unlikely to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge after losing his first team place, with Jose Mourinho preferring to go with Cesar Azpilicueta on the left side of his defence this campaign.
Understandably, there appears to be a long list of European clubs showing an interest in the England international while New York Red Bulls have already made him a very tempting offer to move to the MLS.
However, the Mirror claim Cole is ready to delay making a switch to Major League Soccer because he wants one more season in the Premier League before moving to the US, and a move to Anfield could be on the cards.
The newspaper suggests that Brendan Rodgers – who coached Cole during his time at Chelsea – will look to bring in a new first choice left-back in the summer and is weighing-up offering the former Arsenal ace a contract at Liverpool.
It would certainly be a very tempting opportunity for Cole as he’d not only get to stay in England but play at a top team who could be competing in the Champions League next season.
Ideally for Liverpool they could bring in a younger option at left-back but Cole would make for a reliable short-term solution and he’d bring with him a wealth of experience. The full-back has won 1 Champions League, 3 Premier League titles and 7 FA Cup’s during an illustrious career while he’s also earned over 100 caps for England.
There won’t be many players like Cole available on a free this summer so it could be a shrewd move if Rodgers can pull it off.
