Mourinho ‘In Contact’ With Ibrahimovic But Hints At Duo As Move Would Be Impossible
Jose Mourinho has admitted he’s still in contact with Zlatan Ibrahimovic but hinted at moves for Falcao and Cavani as signing the striker would be impossible
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Jose Mourinho hints at moves for Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted he’s still in contact with Zlatan Ibrahimovic but hinted at moves for Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani as signing the Swedish striker would be impossible, according to ESPN.
The Blues currently sit top of the Premier League table and are gearing up for a clash with Galatasaray in the last 16 of the Champions League, but they have done it all without a consistent goalscorer this season.
Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba have all been unconvincing up front with none able to find the back of the net on a regular basis, leading to reports that Chelsea will be on the look-out for a world class hitman this summer.
Mourinho has now fuelled speculation that he could move for Monaco striker Radamel Falcao after being quoted by ESPN as saying off-camera before an interview with French TV on Sunday that he has no striker and Falcao doesn’t have a team:
“I have a team, but no striker,”
“Falcao does not have a team. A player like him can’t play in front of 3,000 people. Monaco is a club to end [your career with].”
Mourinho also had his say on Paris Saint-Germain strikers Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, saying any move for the Swedish hitman would be “mission impossible”, but hinted he could try for Cavani despite the fact the French champions paid over £50m for his services just last summer.
“PSG payed a lot of money for him[Cavani]. His contract is also incredible,”
“Maybe it’s not impossible like Zlatan, because I think that Zlatan is more important to the structure of the club. But I think that it’s also difficult.” Mourinho is quoted as saying by ESPN
When pushed about a potential move for Ibrahimovic, the Portuguese coach revealed he still keeps in contact with the striker but insists he’s happy in France. He continued:
“It’s impossible. He’s happy in Paris. I know that because we’re friends and we’re in contact.
“I don’t think PSG, with their economic potential, will ever want to open the door for him. It’s mission impossible.”
Falcao is currently on the sidelines after rupturing his cruciate ligament in his knee in January and is now in a race against time to be fit for this summers World Cup in Brazil, but he’d be a sensational signing for Chelsea if they could pull it off.
The 28-year-old has been a prolific goal-scorer through-out his career, scoring 199 goals in 302 games, so he’d certainly be capable of providing the Blues with more fire-power next season, although the club could have reservations spending too much on him given the seriousness of his latest injury.
Cavani is a year younger and there wouldn’t be the question marks over his fitness but as Mourinho says, he’s on a huge contract at PSG and the big-spending French club are unlikely to welcome interest in the player after only signing him from Napoli 6 months ago, so his signing could prove difficult.
However, there have been rumours that he’s not entirely happy at PSG as he’s being asked to play out of position to accommodate for Ibahimovic, so you never know, the Uruguayan might be able to force his way out.
