A dramatic night at Stamford Bridge saw Chelsea in to the semi-finals of the Champions League as the Londoners beat Paris Saint Germain 2-0 on the night.
A dramatic night at Stamford Bridge saw Chelsea in to the semi-finals of the Champions League as the Londoners beat Paris Saint Germain 2-0 on the night.
Substitute Demba Ba struck in the 87th minute to level the aggregate score after another substitute Andre Schurrle had opened the scoring on the night.
Ba’s late goal prompted rapturous scenes at the Bridge, with coach Jose Mourinho sprinting the length of the touchline to celebrate with his players and bark out orders for the remaining few minutes.
Chelsea survived a late scare when Petr Cech reacted to palm away Marquinhos’ shot but at the final whistle it was Eden Hazard’s penalty in Paris last week which made the difference. Chelsea overcame a 3-1 first-leg defeat to squeeze through on the away-goals ruling.
Player Ratings
Cech- 8- at his very best to deny Marquinho in the dying seconds and was a commanding presence throughout.
Azpilicueta- 7- dealt well with the threat of Lucas Moura who was made to look half the player he is.
Terry- 8- excellent show of leadership and character. Made Edinson Cavani look amateurish.
Cahill- 8- showed incredible composure at times and even had to mop up a few of David Luiz’s sloppy passes.
Ivanovic- 8- demonstrated his ability to get forward and create chances for team mates with a number of crosses. Never caught out defensively.
David Luiz- 7- there were a few moments where the Brazilian either over-ran the ball or was caught in possession but on the whole he was solid and helped get Chelsea playing further up.
Lampard- 6- his influence was limited to his delivery from set-pieces, from which he can still cause problems. But his ageing legs don’t seem to be able to carry him in midfield like they used to. Subbed on 66 minutes.
Hazard- no rating- forced off with barely 20 minutes gone with a calf injury. Credit to his team for over-coming such a big set-back.
Oscar- 7- bore some of the burden of creativity after the Belgian went off. Not as effective, but brought others in to play and had some menacing shots on goal.
Willian- 9- simply superb. Was at his best in all aspects of his game which, as well as skipping effortlessly past opponents and firing at goal, also includes falling into rank behind the ball when PSG were in possession and getting his hands dirty defensively. Man of the Match.
Eto’o- 6- almost put the Blues ahead early on from a low Hazard cross but he waned as the game went on, perhaps through fitness rather than effort.
Subs
Schurrle- 8- replaced Hazard and more than eased the pain of the Belgian’s absence. Scored the opening goal after half an hour, ghosting into the box unchecked to set up a sensational comeback.
Ba- 7- replaced Lampard on 66 minutes as Mourinho sought desperately the second goal that would level the aggregate score. Mostly anonymous but found himself in the right place at the right time, gambling on the ball reaching the six-yard box and sending Stamford Bridge (and his coach) into hysterics.
Torres- 5- another midfielder sacrificed for a striker. The Spaniard replaced Oscar with nine minutes left and played his part in seeing out the victory.
What a night!…Every Chelsea player played their part in a fantastic European comeback, but who stood out for you?… Did Schurrle do enough to suggest he can take over from Hazard while he’s out injured?…Who would you like to see Chelsea draw in the semi-final?…Can they go all the way and win it for the second time in two years?…please leave your comments below…
