Rodgers Offers Daniel Sturridge Injury Update Ahead Of Chelsea Clash
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has given an update on the fitness of Daniel Sturridge ahead of the Reds crucial clash with Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool entertain Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday afternoon in a game being dubbed by many as a potential Premier League title-decider.
Ahead gave game, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has been speaking at his pre-match press conference this afternoon and has given Liverpoolfc.com an update on the fitness of key striker Daniel Sturridge.
The 24-year-old suffered a minor hamstring strain during the second half of Liverpool’s win over Manchester City two weeks ago and subsequently missed the clubs 3-2 victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road last weekend.
Speculation in Thursday’s newspapers suggested that Sturridge was responding well to treatment and was set to return in time to face his former club on Sunday.
However, Rodgers has played down those reports insisting that no decision has been made over the players involvement just yet and they will re-assess his fitness over the next 24 hours before deciding whether Sturridge will feature this weekend.
Rodgers told the clubs website:
“We will see. We’ll give it another 24 hours. He’s working hard with the medical team. So we shall see.”
“But if he’s not fit, we’ve coped before; we’ve managed before without a number of players. We’ll go into the game with confidence. We’ll assess that over the next 24 hours.”
Liverpool were able to get past Norwich without Sturridge last week, scoring three goals in the process, but there is little doubt the Merseysiders would love to have him back in the squad to face the Blues this weekend.
The Reds head into the game holding a five point lead over second-placed Chelsea so victory over their rivals would put them within touching distance of lifting their ever Premier League trophy and their first league title in 24 years.
