Man Utd look set to beat Chelsea to the signing of Luke Shaw with the left-back set to sign a five-year deal worth £75k-a-week after United agreed a £25m fee.
As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Man Utd are on the verge of signing Luke Shaw.
Manchester United look set to beat Chelsea to the signing of Luke Shaw with reports today claiming the left-back will sign a five-year deal worth £75,000-a-week after United agreed a £25m fee with Southampton.
Shaw has emerged as one of the most highly-rated young defenders in Europe after two excellent seasons in the Premier League with Southampton, and his performances are expected to see him earn a place in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad, which will be announced later this afternoon.
It’s not only at international level where Shaw’s form has been recognised, as the 18-year-old has also drawn admirers from the upper echelons of the Premier League with Chelsea and Manchester United strongly linked with the youngster in recent months.
Chelsea were considered as the early front-runners for his signature as the player grew up just around the corner from the Blues Cobham training base and with Jose Mourinho likely to be on the look-out for a successor to Ashley Cole, many thought Shaw would be heading to Stamford Bridge this summer.
However, Manchester United have made their move early and appear to have beaten their rivals to the youngsters signature, with the Mirror claiming that the deposed champions have now agreed a £25m deal with Southampton and Shaw is set to sign a five-year contract worth around £75,000-a-week.
The news comes amid widespread reports suggesting United placed a formal bid for the left-back late on Sunday evening, with Sky Sports News one of several outlets to claim a deal was in the pipeline.
But it now appears the move has taken a step closer, if the Mirror is to be believed, and £25m would make Shaw the second most expensive teenager in British history, behind only Wayne Rooney’s transfer to United from Everton.

It would certainly represent a major coup for the club, as they’ve endured a majorly disappointing season following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson last summer. Fans are expected a busy summer and the signing of Shaw early in the window would indicate the club mean business in the transfer market, and the player would arrive at Old Trafford with the task of being the long-term replacement for Patrice Evra.
