Oscar played a starring role in tonight’s World Cup opener as the Chelsea playmaker scored the third goal in a 3-1 win for Brazil over Croatia.
The hosts were given a shock as Marcelo put through his own net early on but Barcelona superstar Neymar levelled with a long-range effort before half-time.
Oscar was pulling the strings in attack but there was controversy as the referee awarded Brazil a penalty when Fred went down easily in the area. Neymar was fortunate to see the resulting spot kick find the back of the net as the Croatian keeper should have kept it out, but the hosts had a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes remaining.
Croatia didn’t sit back and went close to finding an equaliser before Oscar surged clear on the break in the final minute to seal the win with a fine strike. The Blues ace was widely recognised as the Man of the Match for his excellent all-round display and it seems the rest Jose Mourinho gave him towards the end of last season has done him the world of good.
