Jose Mourinho Reveals Transfer Talks With Real Madrid Ace
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has admitted he called Luka Modric to try and lure the Real Madrid midfielder to Stamford Bridge this summer, according to reports.
The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Jose Mourinho admits Luka Modric talks.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has admitted he called Luka Modric to try and lure the Real Madrid midfielder to Stamford Bridge this summer, according to reports.
The Blues were strongly linked with a move for the Croatian international schemer earlier in the summer when Mourinho was on the look-out for a midfield play-maker.
The speculation died down after Modric committed his future to the Bernabeu and the West Londoners eventually turned their attention to Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas, wrapping up a surprise deal last month.
However, Blues boss Mourinho has now admitted he made a personal phone-call to Modric to try and convince the 28-year-old to join him at the Bridge, but it seems the former Tottenham ace spurned the Portuguese coaches advances and decided to stay at Madrid.
‘I called Modric privately,’
‘You know I really appreciate Luka Modric and his qualities – but he stays in Real Madrid.’ Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Metro.
Mourinho knows Modric well from their time together at Madrid so it’s no surprise he wanted to be reunited with him again in the Premier League this summer.
But I’m not sure how Madrid officials will feel when they learn that their former boss has tried to ‘tap up’ one of their current players. I’m sure things like this go on all the time but perhaps Mourinho should keep it to himself next time and not tell reporters about his ‘private’ telephone calls.

Modric would have been an excellent addition had he decided to take up Mourinho’s offer, but the Blues have done extremely well to bring in Fabregas instead as the Spaniard has been one of the most creative play-makers in Europe over the past few season at Barca, and no doubt he’ll prove to be a superb signing for Chelsea.
