When will you come back Ver-man???

Written by Armourysquare.

Last year, AW signed a player worth 10 million pounds from Ajax Football Club. At first Gooner reactions were ” Thomas who ?, ” but gradually, as time went on they began calling him the  Verminator. And yes, he did deserve that name. Solid at the back, and a thunderous left-foot, Thomas Vermaelen is an unique footballer. Every Gooner likes him, and why not. The guy tries, the guy performs, and the guy delivers.  Indeed, he is the perfect Arsenal player.

But the Gods are not very kind to us are they? This year, it becomes better…… On international duty with Belgium, Vermaelen suffered an Achilles injury. Now the predicted time period was 1-2 weeks and yes, the guy did return against Blackburn. But after that, its difficult to assume whether he is alive or not. Neither is there any sign of return nor any conversations on

On 12th November AW admitted that there is :

“no logical explanation” for his ongoing problem. “We have to be patient. We know a lot medically nowadays but there are some mysteries that we do not know about. At the moment we have no rational explanation for his pain. That means there is no reason to have surgery and there is no logical explanation for his pain. We have to be patient and just hope it will go. That means rest at the moment.”

So, if we believe what the boss says, as quite frankly we don’t have any other reliable option, the situation is in no way encouraging for us Gooners. Some may call me crazy, but if Tommy-V is not scheduled to be back by latest January, a new defensive signing will be required. Why ? Because when the Champions league will return in February, along with the FA Cup afterwards, the pressure on Squillaci, Djourou and Kosher will be too much to handle. And remember, since this is Arsenal, players do get injured ( alot !!!). We may end up playing Song and Diaby as Centre-backs, that too if the latter ever comes back.

So, being a pessimist, I ask you. Do you think AW should sign anybody in the January transfer window, and if ‘yes’, who ?

It is really worrying that they don’t know whats wrong with him. Hopefully he’ll be back soon and stay injury free. I don’t think we should buy anyone tbh. We have 3 pretty good CBs and hordveit in reserve. If we were going after sum1, we need world class – the 2 we bought in the summer are so-so, not longterm 1st choice.

Subotic looks really good, 15-20 odd million. We should go for him aggressively but prolly won’t. It signings like that I feel, that having been giving chelsea and manu the edge. Wenger wood never have done rooney: 18yo 30m, ferdinand 30m or drogba 24m. We have the money but not the will to do these deals….

Yes, he should buy at least one more defender to complement the ones we have. A better buy will be par metarsacker or phil jagielka. We all know that koscielny is card prone.

Absolutely, we need at least one more top quality CB to allow for injuries and what will be a very busy schedule in the new year, FA Cup, Carling Cup, Premier League and of course the Champions League Final. Hopefully someone that can be utilised in at least one other position. I would like to see the Verm playing as a DM for a match to see how he does. Do we still need a “Drogba” type forward that is a clinical finisher, hopefully when RVP returns fully we will know by January but we create a huge number of chances that we do not bury.

I think Wenger should sign another defender, it could be some taller and stronger, Djourou type but better. Sakho, Zapata would be ideal.

Whether Vermaelen is available or not we still need to sign another centre back it`s a high risk area and Wenger has admitted as much. If they are to be found I think January will see the introduction of two new defensive players.

What we really need is a CB who can provide solid cover at RB. Sagna rarely gets rested and when he does Eboue does not convince. Eboue is great going forward but he is nowhere near as good defensively as Sagna. If we bought a right footed Defender who’s 6ft+ who can play CB & RB we would be significantly stronger and would be well set for the 2nd half of the season.
I have always liked Micah Richards and he’s an Arsenal fan but there’s no way City will sell him to us. But that type of player would be perfect.
