Wenger Rules Out Cahill Bid Leaving Chelsea, Spurs & Liverpool To Battle It Out

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has ruled out a January move for Bolton stopper Gary Cahill.

The Gunners tried to sign the England international in the summer, and had a reported £6m bid rejected with Bolton holding out for £15m. However, Wenger has denied he will be back in for the 25-year-old in January, stating he already has plenty of option in the centre of defence, following the acquisition of Per Mertesacker in the summer and the return to fitness of Thomas Vermaelen.

“Cahill is good enough to play Champions League, but he is not someone I would be interested in,” said Wenger.

“I have got five central defenders – [Laurent] Koscielny, [Sebastien] Squillaci, Mertesacker, [Thomas] Vermaelen and [Johan] Djourou. Of this five, four are international players.

“We were in the market in the summer, but at that time they [Bolton] were greedy.”

Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs have also been strongly linked with Cahill, and Wenger’s admission will leave the trio to battle it out for his signature in January, with Bolton believed to be willing to do business for around £9m as they can’t risk losing him for nothing in the summer.
