Manchester United’s injury woes continued after goalkeeper David De Gea joined an ever-growing list of absentees after picking up a knee injury last night.

De Gea was set to line-up against FC Midtjylland in United’s Europa League last-32 clash in Denmark but injured himself during the warm-up shortly before kick off.

Sergio Romero was drafted in to start between the sticks but despite an impressive display, the Argentinean couldn’t prevent United slumping to an embarrassing 2-1 first leg defeat.

However, while the result itself was worrying, United will be more concerned by the injury to De Gea and the club confirmed last night on ManUtd.com that the Spanish international will undergo further tests today to determine the full extent of the problem.

Speaking to the clubs official website after the game, Louis van Gaal said:

“It happened in the warm up. We have to wait and see for the scan tomorrow, then maybe we can say more but it was a big surprise.”

We’ll have to wait and see how serious the injury is but De Gea is already considered as a major doubt for next weekend’s huge Premier League clash against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

United head in to the game sitting fifth in the table and six points off fourth placed Manchester City, while Arsenal are a further four points clear in third, so United are going to need to beat the Gunners next week to keep their top four hopes alive. Losing De Gea for such a pivotal match would be a hammer blow to United, so I’m sure they will be praying that scan results come back positive.

This latest setback comes just days after it emerged that Wayne Rooney had been ruled out for at least a month with his own knee injury so they join a lengthy injury list that also includes Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Guillermo Varela, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Adnan Januzaj.
