Chelsea Make Late Bid To Hijack Liverpool’s Move For Midfield Powerhouse

By on July 11, 2016

The summer transfer window is now open for business so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, the race for Axel Witsel hots-up….

Chelsea have made a late attempt to try and snatch Axel Witsel away from Liverpool and Everton and are now considered favourites to sign the Belgian midfielder this summer, according to the Mirror.

Witsel came through the ranks at Standard Liege and made his name at Benfica before earning a big-money move to Zenit St Petersburg in 2012 where he’s helped the Russian outfit lift the Russia Premier League title and Russia Cup.

The 27-year-old is expected to be on the move again this summer and it looks as though he’s going to be offered the chance to test himself in the Premier League as the Mirror claim that Liverpool and Everton have been battling-it-out over his signature in recent weeks.

Everton are desperately trying to use their newly-found wealth to strengthen their squad while Jurgen Klopp is on the look out for another midfielder with Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen tipped to leave Anfield this summer and Witsel is on the radar or both clubs.

However, the newspaper suggests that with the Mersey duo still haggling over a deal, it’s left the door open for Chelsea to try and hijack the move with Roman Abramovich now personally working on getting a deal agreed with Zenit.

The Mirror claim that Chelsea’s interest is ‘concrete’ and suggest that Witsel would favour a move to London over Merseyside meaning the Blues are now considered as favourites for his signature this summer.

Antonio Conte is seemingly in the market for a new central midfielder to compliment the new 3-5-2 formation he’s expected to play at Stamford Bridge next season and Witsel would certainly bring some physicality to the Chelsea side.

We’ll have to see how things progress over the coming days but Chelsea don’t tend to mess about when they set their sights on a target so the likes of Liverpool will have to act fast if they want to prevent Witsel from moving to west London this summer.
