Liverpool have opened initial talks over a potential £34m deal to sign Leicester City attacker Riyad Mahrez this summer but face stiff competition for his signature, according to a report in the Metro.

Mahrez became a household name after joining Leicester from Le Harve in 2014 and he helped the club gain promotion to the Premier League before aiding their survival the following year.

However, the Algerian international emerged as one of the best attackers in Europe last season as he scored 17 goals and provided 10 assists to help guide the Foxes to a sensational Premier League title win.

Mahrez won the PFA Player of the Year last season and attracted interest from a number of top European clubs before deciding to stay with Leicester and sign a new contract.

Like many of his team mates, his form has dropped significantly this season but Mahrez is still remembered for his stunning form of last year and is on the radar of several clubs ahead of the summer.

The Metro are citing a report coming from Spanish outlet Sport that claims Liverpool are keen to lure Mahrez to Anfield and have opened initial talks over a potential £34m deal.

Jurgen Klopp is expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer to continue his rebuilding job on Merseyside as they are still well short of being genuine title challengers.

Liverpool are 13 points off the pace this season and odds at What Bookies suggest the Reds are going to be battling for the top four again next year unless they make some significant additions this summer.

Strengthening his attacking options is likely to be a priority for Klopp, especially if they finish in the top four as he’ll need a much bigger squad to choose from if they qualify for the Champions League.

Mahrez is seemingly on the German coaches radar and he’d be a superb signing for Liverpool if they could get him back playing like he was last season as they need some competition for Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane.

Liverpool must sign two wingers and revert to 4:2:3:1 formation so that Cotinho plays the play maker’s role behind Mane. Klopp MUST not sell Cotinho
