Marcos Alonso scored twice as Chelsea secured their first victory of the new season with a hard fought 2-1 win over Tottenham at Wembley this afternoon.

The Blues started brightly and opened the scoring midway through the first half when Marcos Alonso curled home a stunning free-kick in to the top corner to give Chelsea the lead in the 24th minute.

Tottenham almost equalised before half-time when Harry Kane saw his effort come back off the post while Willian also hit the woodwork after the break against the run of play.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side continued to pile on the pressure and they eventually levelled things up when Michy Batshuayi headed Christian Eriksen’s free-kick in to his own net in the 82nd minute.

However, Tottenham were only level for a matter of minutes as Chelsea restored their advantage when Alonso drilled home from a tight angle after Mousa Sissoko had been robbed in midfield – although Hugo Lloris should have done better.

Tottenham pushed to find a late equaliser but Chelsea hung on to inflict a first defeat of the season on Spurs while the Blues get their first points on the board.
