Tottenham face a battle to keep hold of Danny Rose as Manchester United are hoping to sign the £53m-rated defender this summer, according to the Guardian.

Jose Mourinho knows he needs to further strengthen his squad if United are to compete for major trophies next season and left-back has been a problem area ever since he arrived at Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw seems likely to look for a move this summer after failing to force his way in to Mourinho’s plans while Ashley Young turns 33 in July so a long-term replacement is needed.

Rose has been strongly linked with a move to United over the past year since casting serious doubt over his future in north London following a controversial interview he conducted last summer.

The left-back questioned Tottenham’s transfer policy and admitted he wanted to move back up north to be closer to his family while also expressing his desire to start winning trophies.

Rose was fined and made to issue a public apology but he’s failed to regain his first team place under Mauricio Pochettino since returning from a knee injury and he’s expected to push for a move at the end of the season.

The Guardian claim United have identified Rose as a prime target and Mourinho is confident of getting a deal agreed to take the 27-year-old to Old Trafford this summer as he looks to solve his problems at left-back.

However, Spurs will be keen not to lose the England international to a direct rival and chairman Daniel Levy is known to be a tough negotiator so it’s not going to be an easy deal to pull off.

Tottenham reluctantly sold Kyle Walker to Manchester City last summer and the newspaper suggests United would need to match the £53m their rivals paid if they want to persuade Spurs to cash-in on Rose.

Obviously the Red Devils have the financial firepower to meet that kind of asking price and I think Rose would be an excellent signing for United if they manage to get a deal agreed for his signature this summer.
