United Beat Arsenal To Sign French Youngster

United have won the race to sign Lens defender Raphael Varane. The 18-year old has impressed this campaign, which saw the 6ft 3in centre half make 19 appearances for the French outlet.

The Metro reports that United have beaten off competition from title rivals Arsenal and German giants Bayern Munich, but the youngster claims he has not spoken to Sir Alex Ferguson regarding a potential move, saying:

‘There’s no promises from Man Utd. There has been contact from Manchester United’s side, but also from other clubs,’ said the Frenchman.

‘I do like the Premier League. But there’s also interest from Spain and Germany. I don’t like one competition in particular.’
