Arsenal Transfer Gossip: Blackburn skipper Christopher Samba…. is he good enough to be a Gunner?

By on May 21, 2011

This player has been linked numerous times and constantly for the past year or so, to a move to the Gunners. This player was tipped to move in January, but didn’t happen. The player that I’m talking about, is again heavily linked to move to the Gunners. The player I’m talking about is Blackburn centerback and skipper, Congolese international Christopher Samba.

Christopher Samba is a Congolese international born in France, on March 28, 1984 in the city of Creteil. Samba is known for his toughness, aggressiveness, his physical capabilities, and aerial ability (he stands at 6’4” tall), as well as possessing leadership qualities shown by him becoming the captain of Blackburn. He started his career with lowly French side FC Rouen before leaving to Sedan, where he played 4 times with the regular side and 26 times with the reserves. He left to Germany, joining Hertha Berlin in 2004, where he struggled to get playing time. Samba made 28 appearances with the reserves and 20 appearances with the first team in 3 years with the club.

It is at Blackburn, where he finally began to show his ability, then coach Mark Hughes gave him his chance, when he offered him 5 day trial with the club and later signed for Blackburn for around 450,000 pounds in January 2007. Samba has turned into one of the most consistent and reliable centerbacks in the league, putting in notable performances, his last against the Gunners in the 0-0 draw at the Emirates which is probably the main reason, Arsenal fans want to see him as a Gunner next season. He has made 165 appearances so far with the Rovers, scoring 16 goals.

Christopher Samba is valued by the press at around 12 million pounds, which I believe is a ridiculous and over-hyped value, I don’t think he’s worth near that at all, along with another heavily-linked defender in Gary Cahill who is rated at 15 million pounds (that is the same Giorgio Chiellini’s value, who is a proven, world class defender), which just shows how over-hyped Premier League players are. I believe there are better centerbacks at more reasonable prices like Mamadou Sakho, Giorgio Chiellini, Cristian Zapata, just to name a few. In my opinion, Samba’s value is in the 6-8 million pound range and other than the Gunners, he has been linked to Tottenham, Manchester City, Aston Villa and various other clubs around Europe.

Below are some videos of Christopher Samba. What do you think? Is Samba good enough for Arsenal? Is he overrated? Is he overvalued? Should Wenger sign him?

Cheers and take care,

Omar – www.o-posts.net

Nope- not good enough at all.

He is a worthy CB who has put in some great performances for Blackburn but they are a defensive set team that gets a lot of protection from their midfield. The reality is, right or wrong, is that we play a far deeper approach to supporting our back 4 and thus Arsenal CB’s need to be quick and good at ball distribution as well as adept at headers. I do think Samba would offer us a plan B against teams like Blackburn funnily enough and the gobshites at Stoke but feel he would get caught out by the exposure he would get at Arsenal. As was suggested- Zapata and Chiellini are FAR FAR classier options at a similar price (£12-15m)

I agree man, Samba is good, but he’s not worth 12 million pounds.

Thanks for commenting and take care,

You are right man, SAMBA is not worth 12 million – he is worth much more than that, maybe 15 to 18 million.

He is certainly better than Cahill and miles better than any defenders you have, so pay the money and get the goods. Or pay less for someone else and win nothing again next season.

I think he’d be a great signing for us. He could give us the power at the back that’s been missing since sol campbell was here in his prime.
Still, I’m not convinced he would fix all our problems. The last time our defence looked reasonably solid over a season we played largely with almunia in goal, clichy and sagna as fullbacks, and two relatively small CBs in gallas and toure. Why were we better defensively then? Imo it was purely down to tactics. It was a 4-4-2 system with better protection for the fullbacks, and flamini providing great cover in the middle. We looked a bit better at defending corners as well I think because we had more experienced and focussed players in the side, and adebayor was there to help out. So while I would welcome samba joining as a step in the right direction, I can only hope that the tactical issues will also be addressed. Perhaps he can provide some leadership at the back as well, which could only help. Djourou for example is about as big as him, and he is a good defender imo, but he doesn’t have those leadership/mental qualities yet.

We don’t need Cahill because he’s crap. People only talk about him because there were rumours linking him with Arsenal.
I mean really what has he done this season apart from consitenly get burn’t for pace against other players and lose defenders when they run at him at least 7/10 times.

How about Micah Richards in central defense?

Overvalued at 12 million. Thats why Arsenal will never win anything.

Samba might leave but the bidding will start at 18 Million

Samba would easily fit into the Arsenal back four. His aerial presence alone would move you on to the next level. As for his transfer value, the only reason Cahill for example is valued at £15million is because he’s an English player proven to be of Premiership quality. Samba’s touted price reflects his similar quality but is valued lower due to the fact he isn’t home grown.

Personally it would take £15-20million for Samba for me to be happy, because we don’t have to sell him. He’s more valuable to us being settled in our team alongside Jones.

Wenger should get valuable players next season, because i don’t see Arsenal as champions unless he does that. And i also suggest he brings in Samba to improve the Arsenal defence.Thank you

I believe he is much better than: Djourou, Koscielny, specially Squillaci ( hopefully he is going soon). It’s all depend also with how’s our dm shield and protecting our back 4. Alex song cannot last 90 minutes + african nations cup this january, its too risky for frimpong or coquelin, they are too in experiences. Someone likes: Verthonghen/ Inler/Parker or M’Villa is a must in our shopping list.

He is better than all our centre halves at defending and seeing as that is what you want from your centre half, i say YES he is good enough. If Wenger continuously brings in players without EPL experience we will always be exposed. He has to be less of a risk than Squillaci, Koscielny and even Vermaelen were. That said we need an all action no nonsense DM in front of him. Scott Parker, Gokhan Inler spring to mind as we cannot afford Rodwell. But if we are really counting the pennies go for Torsten Frings, available on a free and would be a great mentor to Song, Frimpong and Coquelin.

Thank you all for commenting, looks like the majority want Samba as a Gunner next season. But is he really worth 12 million pounds? There are certainly better and more classier options at that value (the players that I have mentioned, Chiellini, Zapata, etc.)

Is he really the best defensive option for Wenger and the Gunners?

    Thanks and take care everyone,

    Omar

If you don’t think he’s worth 12 million then f off and try to buy another established centre half for that kind of money. You won’t get Samba for less tan 18 Million

I reckon mr wenger should go for samba, cahill, Scott Parker, benzema, hazard, gervinho, keep nasri and fabregas and the rest of our star players, get rid of bendther, clichy, denilson and almunia and send chamakh on loan to another prem team to gain some experience 🙂 vermaelen can play LB which would make us more defensive. I’m questing bringing in Defoe? Surplus at spurs, 8m?

Arshavin Dead Wood, that got is 10 goals and 17 assists, who else at Arsenal has got better assists than him this season, look at the stats and stop listening to those stupid pundits who naturally just hate Arsenal

All we need is Benzema and Vertonghen to play LB and back up CB, and maybe SAMBA but I would much rather prefer Kos-Verm

Um.. how the heck is Giorgio Chiellini only worth 15m? He’s worth at least 20-25m. If he’s worth only 15m, every club would want to sign him. And regarding Samba, he’s obviously worth 12m.

Zapata, Chiellini and Sahko may well be better, but there is no guarantee they will succeed in England… some players just can’t quite adjust. Remember how highly-rated Boumsong used to be, pre-Newcastle?

Samba is proven to be one of the top handful of Premier League centre backs. He’s not fancy, but Arsenal already have a whole team of fancy players and it’s not getting them anywhere. He has exactly what Arsenal don’t have – leadership, guts, size and presence in defence.

Get rid of Almunia, Clichy, Squillaci, Diaby, Denilson, Eboue, Arshavin, Bendtner and (possibly) Vela. Sign Given, Cahill, Samba, Jose Enrique (or that Celtic fella) Hazard, Gervinho, Benzema aswell as those young Barca lads. Then, THEN you will may get somewhere. Need to flush the shit out of your squad.

Please don’t be angry towards my opinion… 🙂
