What Liverpool Need This Transfer Season

By on May 25, 2011

It’s perhaps Liverpool’s most important transfer window in their recent years as they seek redemption following a disappointing 6th place finish in the EPL this season.

Positions in need of assessing

Every Liverpool fan knows that our left flank really needs some attention, with the left wing and left back really needing some more experienced and talented players. Another slot that needs some work on is the right wing role, with Liverpool lacking in an out-and-out winger.

Yes, Hodgson, bought some ‘Fulham’ players and brought them to Merseyside, but as the saying goes, “It’s Liverpool FC for crying out loud”, we certainly should be able to cope through the tough times. You can even say that in terms of players, we nearly have exactly the same, except the Suarez and Carroll combo swap for the lone Fernando Torres.

We Need More Out and out wingers

So I guess you guys know where this is heading. First thing I would like to say is, personally, I think that whichever way you see the next paragraph, I want Liverpool FC to keep Dirk Kuyt. He is very versatile and is brilliant for the big occasions. He grabs goals and works unselfishly for the team.

What I want to see Liverpool FC play next season is with more crosses, and if you look at the stats (I don’t have any with me right now), I’m quite convinced that Liverpool have scored fewer than most this season from crosses.

You’ve got to have more than one method to break down defences, not just playing through the middle or pouncing on that odd loose ball. Having a good crosser with pace on either/both wings would be a benefit as than basically more chances can be created and more goals can go in.

And the fact is that we have plenty of players capable of scoring more than a goal or two from headers given the good crosses. In Andy Carroll, Kyrgiakos and Skrtel we have a trio whom can steer the ball very well, along with giving it power at the same time. Yes, Kyrgiakos and Skrtel aren’t attackers, but if you really want me to bring Rodriguez and Meireles into this, I will.

Liverpool Need… To Clear Out

Liverpool need to sell/let go players who aren’t contributing anything to the team cause right now. Joe Cole, Milan Jovanvic and Konchesky (who is in fact not with Liverpool as of now) simply must be offloaded in the summer.

Liverpool are on the up, and you’ve gotta replace your players on the down. Clearing out would give Dalglish more money in the summer to work with. Moreover, there’s no real point keeping players who are simply going to be warming the benches all season long. You need players whom are going to challenge to fight for the first XI places if not get those spots.

The Dillema: Do we need an attacking or defensive left-back

The best teams have different styles of operating their full-backs, with Inter Milan deploying the attacking right back in Maicon along with Manchester United in Patrice Evra, whilst you have European giants Barcelona normally deploying (recently recovered) left back Eric Abidal.

So the question is now, do we need that attacking or defensive edge to the side? I’ll leave that as my question to you readers, so would you prefer the attacking or defensive left back and even if you already have an opinion on this, who you would like to see at the left-back slot next season? The best replies can even make it into my next post.

One other thing that is needed is pace and power through the middle – promoting Kelly (at the expense of Skrtel, Kyrgiakos and maybe Carragher too) could potentially provide that necessary dynamism at the back.

We’d need to go out into the transfer market to bring that quality into our midfield though

Liverpool are the most annoying fans in the world, all your sites post links to who you want, Marko Marin and Mata for the wings, Ageuro upfront with Benzema, Mertesacker in defence with Coentrao at left back, lool you must be having a laugh.

What player is going to want to go to a club who has achieved 7th and 6th in the last 2 years.

Be realistic and more knowledgable about football, Enrique would be great for you at left back and is a step up, Cahill (if nobody else bigger wants him) in central defence, NZogbia is one of the best wingers in the league who you could get, Adel Taarabt would be great for your right hand side and Demba Ba is great upfront, be more realistic as a whole, Messi is not going to go to Liverpool

your ignorance is laughable, your knowledge of football isnt as good as u might think..here’s why big name players wud still come to liverpool…
firstly, not all people are as shortsighted as u are, some players will still look beyond the last two years and liverpool is still a big club…
secondly, our form in the league since jan is only second after chelsea and we are playing gud football..
thirdly, in the new owners, we have someone who is willing to splash the cash if the need arises..
lastly, in kenny we have someone who knows the club and the optimism around the club has never been higher, he has worked wonders at the club…
get your facts straight before running your mouth off..

about the left back position personally i would opt for an attacking minded left back someone like coentrao or sakho and maybe even enrique who can be both attacking along with defensive. i would personally like to se coentrao. i think he is the best left back currently available not that i would be disapionted at all if a defensive minded left back comes in or if sakho or enrique come in.

    liverpool NEED;
    baines
    scott dann
    adam
    young
    taraabt
these players will boost liverpool back into the champions league, and then next season we can move into the next bracket of world class stars.

ifyou remember its a bit like city with sven, they didnt buy the big names in their first season, they had to have a transitional period of 1 season where they could show the world their intension, eg they had elano, then robinho, then tvez and silva etc

Interesting times ahead at Anfield. Two superb buys in January in Suarez & Carroll, so hopefully we can follow that trend this summer. Charlie Adam, is he really better than what we already have in midfield? Aquilani, Gerrard, Meireles, I really don’t see the need for Adam. Ashley Young has his heart set on Old Trafford, Kenny should end his interest there. I think Jose Enrique would be a quality buy for left back, he’s experienced in the Premier League and a good age at 25. Brad Friedal would also be good, just incase Reina decides he wants out, or gets injured. I agree with Jay, N’Zogbia would also be an excellent purchase, again a proven Premier league player at a decent age. Possibly Gary Cahill to bolster the defence too. Then I would hold fire until January again, see where we lie in the league, then maybe tempt a big name foreign star (like a Marin or Aguero) hopefully with the promise of Champions League football in 2012.

With the addition of Marveaux I think we really need another 2 quality wingers i.e. Mata , Marin , Young etc.
For left-back I would recommend Sakho as he can also play at centre back.
So my choices would be :
    Mata
    Marin
    Sakho
    Cheers !
