[Player Ratings] Wolves 0-3 Arsenal: Front Three Do The Damage For Gunners

By on April 12, 2012

Arsenal consolidated third position as they moved five points clear of Tottenham with a 3-0 win over Wolves on Wednesday night.

I had a bad feeling going into this game but was suitably relieved when on-loan Tottenham defender Sebastian Bassong did us a huge favour when he bundled Theo Walcott to the deck in the area after just nine minutes. The ref pointed to the spot and sent the Spurs man off making our task for the evening a damn sight easier.

Up stepped Robin van Persie to dink home a delightful penalty and put us 1-0 up. Only two minutes later Van P combined well with Walcott who kept a cool head to slot home for 2-0. Nerves were settled and even Arsenal couldn’t throw away a 2 goal lead against 10-man Wolves.

Although we did our best to make life difficult for ourselves. We took our foot off the gas and were playing in first gear. Some will say that was sensible and we did what was needed with minimal effort to conserve energy. Others point to last seasons disaster against Newcastle when we let slip a 4-goal lead.

Either way, we had Szczesny to thank for keeping our lead at 2-0 after the Pole made a stunning close range save to deny Doyle. You got the feeling that had Wolves got one back at that point, they would have gone on to get a second, so Szczesny’s save was vital.

Wolves continued to work hard to try and get back in the game, but Yossi Benayoun killed their hopes when he fired home the third with 20 minutes left. So a relatively comfortable 3-0 win leaves us five clear of Tottenham with only five games left.

You can watch video highlights from the game here, and these are my player ratings for the Gunners:

Szczesny – 8 – Stunning save could well have earned us the three points. Also made another smart save late on.

Sagna – 7 – Solid as usual and got forward to join in the attacks.

Vermaelen – 7 – Kept the lively Doyle relatively quite and tried to get attacks going by bringing the ball out from the back.

Djourou – 7 – Looked comfortable alongside Vermaelen. There were no signs of rustiness after so long out the first team, and he made an important block in the second half.

Santos – 6 – You can’t help but like the guy but his casual attitude will cause problems eventually. A crazy ‘shoulder’ pass let in Knightly but Djourou was on hand to block, and he was beaten down the flank on a couple of occasions. But looks good going forward.

Song – 7.5 – Great display again from Alex. Completely dominated the middle of the park.

Arteta – 7 – Steady performance from Mikel but there was no repeat of Sunday’s heroics. Mainly because they weren’t required! Kept things ticking over and sprayed a couple of superb passes around, and a great run set up RVP who went close.

Ramsey – 5.5 – Ok, i’m not one for jumping on bandwagons and needlessly criticising players. BUT, Rambo didn’t have a great game. He fluffed at least three opportunities to score, and also failed to find a couple of through balls that would have lead to chances. He just seems to be lacking something at the minute, probably confidence, and he isn’t going to regain that by hammering him. So let’s try and support the lad and i’m sure he’ll come good.

Walcott – 7 – Another cool finish in front of goal, very similar to the one against Villa, but apart from that Theo didn’t really get in the game or create anything else of note. But a goal and an assist, so he did his job well.

Benayoun – 7.5 – Another hard-working display from Yossi. His energy and work-rate does add a nice balance to the attack and he took his goal very well too.

Van Persie – 7.5 – Lovely chipped penalty and superb assist for Theo’s goal. Just oozes class. Missed a couple of half chances but was always at the heart of everything going forward.

SUBS:

Chamberlain – 7 – Looked lively down the right after coming on for Theo.

Jenkinson – N/A

    Ramsey – 3.5

Wolves were down to 10 men. They were forced into 4-4-1. That meant we out numbered them in midfield and we could still only get 50% possession. That is a disgrace for a ‘tippy tappy’ team. In fact I doubt we would have won if Chesney had not made that super save to stop Wolves making it 2-1. And the main culprit was Ramsey. His ball passing skills are so slow that he destroys our attacking moves. Has Theo ever played well when Ramsey starts?

Ramsey couldn’t get into Swansea’s team because of his slow style. Nothing to do with his injury or confidence. He just doesn’t have the speed of thought and passing required for an Arsenal midfield to function.

Consider this, if Arsene had swapped Rosicky for Ramsey 10 games earlier we would be close to winning the title.

Ramsey supporters are about to eat u up. Believe me. They never spot his undoing to our attacking play.

The lad is not a playmaker. His passing is sloppy and lazy…not inventive and possibly aggressive too. He’s d weakest link in our attacking play. This was his chance to show what he can do… orchestrate and conduct our attacking moves.

Even Song who’s supposed to play deep, created more complete goal-scoring opportunities than him.

Had the OX been started there in his position…believe me…Wolves would have been hit for dead…Robin could have score more! That’s my opinion.

Couldn´t have said it better myself…

I´ll take Dyer, Siggy, Allen, Britton and Routledge over Ramsey…sorry, maybe even McEachran has more to offer.

Lets be constructive in our criticism of Ramsey (I also admit that he hasn’t had a decent outing since coming on as a sub to score against Blackburn) but lets remember that he is still work in progress. I remember when many Gooners joined the bandwagon and criticised Alex Song a few years ago. Some were saying he doesnt deserve to don the Arsenal jersey. Today he is one of the best midfielders not only in our team but in Europe (and I dare say in the whole world). You will soon hear Xavi claiming that Song’s great grandfather once came to Spain during WW2 and urinated on the ground of what is now the Neu Camp and therefore Alex Song has Barcelona DNA. Wenger knows exactly what he is aiming to achieve with Ramsey. He is not going to bench him like most of us would, that would destroy the boy’s confidence.

And thats why we will not win a trophy.

This is exactly what happened with Senderos, Eboue, Denilson. 3 players who wasted Cesc’s time with us.

Eventually Cesc got fed up and left. What next RVP?

David Dein was the father and Arsene the mother in building our success. Wenger has to understand 8 years without trophy. Arsene needs to speed up his assessment on players. I think you have to be blind or stupid not to see that the reason why we turned it around after Milan thrashing was because we dropped Ramsey. Didn’t QPR prove anything?

Denilson was given a similar treatment at the expense of Song time and again…just like Ramsey at the expense of the OX. But soon quality overrules LOVE for someone in football.

And you know when Song started to become the player he is today?…. After he went on loan! Maybe not a bad idea for Ramsey?…

ramsey was awful yesterday he strugled big time. if he doesnt step up he needs to go its as simple as that. he is a great player but he needs to believe and fight for himself and for the team. he is looking like another arshavin lately not interested loses the ball far to easily and 0 confidence he could have had at least 3 goals in the last two games, needs to improve big time because wilshere is coming whats going to happen to him the rosicky, arteta, wilshere, ramsey thats what will happoen

    WE MUST SELL RAMSY !!!
Stop accepting such average wasteful players!
Real quality needed and a strong second team.
At 21 Ramsy is clearly having no football brain and will only get worse.
This ain’t a phase. This is his quality.
    SELL RAMSY !!!!!!
Every time he is on team plays with hand brake and backwards passes.
    Makes Denilson look like messi.
    SELL RAMSY !!!!!!
Blind fools who keep saying he is young and will improve are spurs fans wanting us to keep such rubbish.
Arsenal will only become a top club and win things after we let all the average crap go and buy talent or quality !!
    That’s a fact.
    SELL RAMSY YESTERDAY !!!!!!!!!!

      That’s a little harsh mate

Different poster. Trying to negate valid criticism of Ramsey by being silly.

Ramsey needs to go on loan and prove he still has the speed after his injury and can develop his vision.

At the moment he doesn’t deserve to be at Arsenal.

I don´t think it was harsh at all. So many people are treating the lad with kids gloves. He doesn´t even really have a good sense of spacing he intrudes on too many other healthy build ups and doesn´t really have a football brain.

    Wenger is biased !
We have sold and loaned much better players than Ramsy yet the welsh fool stays?
No brain. No vision. No style.
Over rated and favoured for no reason except he’s welsh and had an injury so Arsene feels he owes him.
    Destroying everything every week.
Slow. Never a good pass. Misses amazing chances.
    Must be sold !!!!!
    MUST BE SOLD !!
Arsenal must start being competitive next season or AW will lose his legendary status as a good manager.
Ramsy and such are the reason we always have weak backups that fail us !!
    Sell Ramsy. Buy quality !!

Every week his name in line up brings anger and depression to our minds because we know what to expect. And he always delivers the rubbish we expect. Every week.

Any proper manager would have loaned him for 10 years or sold him.
How such rubbish is allowed an arsenal shirt is an insult to us fans !!
Since when have we reduced the scale to such standards.

Sad days ahead unless such pathetic over rated over paid spoilt lazy players are sold !!

The few remaining Ramsy fans are useless welsh teen girls or emotional fans with no brain.

    Wake up you fools !!!!!!!!

Maybe you should grow up, and then we’ll start taking your comments seriously.
I for one am not a Ramsey fan, but it is hard to take people who type like a 10-year old seriously.

I don’t know why Prof prefer Ramsey . Always playing against the team. 85% of the passes to the opponents. Prof, this is not the time to experiment.

    Up Gunners.

Adam and co, i cant believe arsenal fans would talk like dis! Ramsey was a gem! Far better than wilshere and prefered by all who knew anytin about football! That guy used to have pace, no thanks to that injury! To be honest i also want him gone, (loan or permanent) but reading such a shallow write up, i cant help but defend him! I think u guys are very new fans, joining arsenal bcos we are above Tottenham and Chelsea coz if u saw ramsey play wen he just arrived a few seasons ago, U would be prompted to feel sorry 4 him!(wenger bought ramsey and nasri in one week about four summers ago). Think twice!

Ramsey to me is a mistake of a player. He has no footballing brain. All the while walcot was being abused, I still rated him because for once, he has speed and could build on that. But tell me, what on earth does ramsey have? Speedless, visionless, clueless, selfish, zero level of confidence, name it! I am not crucifying him cos he still can cut it later but who assures us he will? It’s all under may be. Wt difference does it make, loaning arshavin and keeping ramsey? Get AA23 in those positions and he’ll at least make one count. Wenger has favorites and definitely, AR16 is one!

    • bennie

      April 12, 2012 at 1:34 pm

That’s a gret point. I mean…in regard to loaning AA23 and retain Ramsey.

For all his loss of form, Arshavin could still come up with something magical to win u the game. U need him, just like u see Benayoun during times like this!

This is no time for experiments. However unlike many fans here, I still have some faith in Ramsey…that’s why I advocate for a loan move.

Funny. This post was ratings of the team yet every comment here is about Ramsey including mine. Truth be told, when this number of people debate a point like this it means everyone in the world notices it apart from Wenger and so Welsh peeps. Funny all his lovers agree his form is crap now. IMO Ramsey’s crap

Interesting, another rating website had Ramsey as 8.5 and named him man of the match. But i totally disagree with that rating and agree with this one. Ramsey is terrible. slow, runs around like a maniac and actually breaks up our normally fluent play. I absolutely hate the way he will have 5 men around him and still demand the ball when he has nowhere to go. Then he passes it backwards. never creative, cant assist, cant shoot, no confidence, the list goes on. He has high passing success cos he passe very basically, backwards or sideways.
