[Player Ratings] Arsenal 1-0 Stoke: Podolski Earns Deserved Win Over Poor Potters

By on February 2, 2013

Lukas Podolski

Yet another subdued first half performance. It took us half an hour to get going before we created a few chances towards the end of the first half and were unlucky not to score. However, the tempo didn’t really pick up in the second half as has been the case in previous weeks. Stoke were literally playing with 9 men behind the ball and hoofing it long to Crouch at any given opportunity, and we were struggling to find space to create clear-cut chances.

Eventually their resolve was broken by a deflected free-kick from Lukas Podolski with just 12 minutes left. Far from a vintage performance but we ground out the win. And a vital one it was, especially given the fact Everton drew with Villa and Chelsea lost to Newcastle. A good day for the Gooners. Here are my player ratings:

Arsenal Ratings

Szczesny – 6 – Gets a 6 for turning up. Virtual bystander.

Monreal – 6 – Took his time to settle into the game but showed a lovely piece of skill on the 23rd minute to set up an attack. Also showed he can handle the physical side of things when he shook off a nasty clash of heads that left Walters bleeding. Superb cross almost found Giroud early in the second half. Encouraging first outing overall from the Spaniard.

Mertesacker – 6 – Dealt with Crouch well. A far more assured display after his lackluster performance against Liverpool.

Koscielny – 6 – Forced a decent save from a header before half time and was tested very little at the back. Comfortable afternoon for the Gunners back line.

Sagna – 6 – Spent more time in the Stoke half than ours, which just shows our dominance. Didn’t really offer much in terms of attacking quality though due to lack of space.

Wilshere – 7 – Lovely ball set-up the Oxe just before the break and while he was far from him best, he was still the heart-beat of the team.

Diaby – 6.5 – Showed glimpses of his brilliance on the ball but looked a little rusty at times too.

Arteta – 7 – Great to have him back. Positional sense has been sorely missed in recent weeks and was important in winning possession back quickly on the rare times we lost the ball.

Chamberlain – 6.5 – Missed a golden chance to open the scoring but fired at Begovic from 3 yards out in the first half. Was then unlucky when he forced a good save with a decent right-footed effort shortly after. Fairly lively but eventually subbed.

Walcott – 7 – Arsenal’s best player in the first half when he had the beating of Wilkinson all afternoon, but slightly less effective in the second period. Poor passing wasted a few opportunities but he still looked a real threat.

Giroud – 6 – Should have gone for goal when unmarked towards the end of the first half but elected to head across goal from 8 yards out. Strange decision. Blazed over another chance in the second half. Won a few headers but got little out of the well organised Stoke defence.

Subs:

Podolski – 7 – Got the winner with a deflected free-kick, but they all count!

Cazorla – 6 – Comfortable on the ball, as expected, but no real impact on the game to be honest.

    I think everyone played well.
The only criticism I have of the game came from Jack Wilshere. He had at least 3 chances to have a shot but instead opted to run forward. All three chances the defence stood off him and he was around 20 yards out. If he starts shooting it will greatly improve his already brilliant game

Arteta is making us a bit slow. He never tries to do some riskier stuff…always looking for safe back or side passes.
Sorry, but we were better without him.

A little strange how you rated both Wilshire & Walcott 7 – Is this because they are both English? How is it that our whole defence got 6, yet they did not concede a goal – oh of course, they are all foreign.

The stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Aldo they did not concede a goal, the did’nt do anything out of the ordinary. For example should szczesny been given a 10 if there had not been a single shot on goal? Points are given for how you play and stand out. Not country of origin.

Te most worryiong asect about this afternoon ws the performance of the referee ad the assistant with the Stoke deene dring the second half. Wilkinson tookout Walcott in an off the ball incidet right in front of the assistant, who did nothing. Wilkinson later jabbed Walcott in the eye. The assistant did nothing. Eventually Wilkinson was booked for a foul on Walcot immedaitely before the goal. We then had th debacle of the assistant indicaing offsid when we scored.FoyBoy missed s many incidents and frequently faild to take any action. I wonder if the FA will pursue case against Shawcross who, after his caution, made lewd had jestures towrads the crowd. I suspect the FA will duck out of this one.

Stoke is a disgrace; so too is their manager.

Shakoma- I agree with u part of our downside is not having a predetor striker giroud shoud have burried those chances. I think a striker needs to be hungry enough to throw himself at any chance rather than wait for the perfect opportunity.I know he has good movement and I believe he will get there.bt we need one who can do that now.
Mike-totally agree if only jack can start shooting long range cos he has it in him jus like his winning goal last tym.I felt he had about 3 chances n he was tryn to make a pass.I believe in the psychology of the game.once u start havn long range n bombarded shots at a keeper any tight defense starts to get edgy n tries to close u down quicker thus opening up for spaces but wen u simply rely on clear cut chances via build up play they tend build more confidence even to the point that they grow into the game and eventually hit u on a counter cos they know u r not goin to do much for all your possession.which is what teams have done to us in the past.we know vintage arsenal is passn the ball into the net aka plan a. Plan b is hoof them to giroud.plan c should be have arteta, carzola, jack, poldoski, rosicky, theo n to some extent vermalaen hit those long range shots as they r type of players like schole, lampard n gerrard.

Well done boys. Difficult playing against a rugby team with the officials who also seem to be in rugby mode. Should have sent off at least two Stokes players But that’s the EPL.

da refereez just lets da stoke playerz do wot dey like. they can kick you, diss you, do elbows in da face of walcott, and notin happenz to dem. it is a big cover up by da authorities to let these guyz get away with dem type of tings. shokin man, shocking
