Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash at the Emirates tonight. Here are my players ratings.

Wojciech Szczesny

Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash at the Emirates tonight.

Mesut Ozil missed an early penalty to put the Gunners ahead before the game completely turned when Wojciech Szczesny was sent off after bringing Arjen Robben down in the area just before half time. Alaba missed the resulting penalty but second half strikes from Kroos and Muller have given Arsenal a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Here are my ratings:

Szczesny 6/10

Made a stunning save to deny Kroos from long range but his sending off ended Arsenal’s hopes of getting a positive result. He was slightly unfortunate but that’s the life of a goalkeeper.

Sagna 7/10

Did okay in keeping the Bayern attack at bay as they targetted the left side more often.

Mertesacker 7.5/10

Made at least two blocks from goal bound efforts and held the defence together for long periods.

Koscielny 7.5/10

Was sensational for much of the game and even went on the odd foray forward, but was caught up field for the second goal.

Gibbs 7/10

Was having an excellent game before being forced off with a hamstring injury in the first half.

Flamini 7.5/10

Worked tirelessly in midfield trying to track the likes of Gotze and Kroos, but switched off for the second as he was filling in for Koscielny at centre-back and failed to track Mullers run.

Wilshere 7.5/10

Excellent in the opening 20 minutes and his pass sent Ozil clear to win the penalty, but faded in the second half when Bayern dominated possession.

Cazorla 6.5/10

Was lively early on but was sacrificed when Szczesny was sent off.

Ozil 5.5/10

His penalty miss was crucial as it halted our thunderous start. The penalty itself was very poor. He really needs to come off penalty duties. Did his best to help out Monreal in the second half but his lack of defensive instincts could have cost us further goals as Robben ran riot.

Oxlade-Chamberlain 7.5/10

Another who was superb in the opening half hour. He was full of running and his pace was causing them problems, but again his influence all but ended after the break and he was restricted to helping out at the back.

Sanogo 7/10

A surprise starter but worked hard up front and made some impressive contributions, including a superb ball to release The Ox in the first half.

Subs:

Monreal 5/10

Was given a really tough time by Robben. Switched off and failed to track the Dutchman’s run behind which led to the penalty and sending off, and generally struggled to cope with the Bayern winger all game.

Fabianski 7/10

Could do little about either goal and did well to deny Robben on a few occasions.

Rosicky 6/10

On for his energy and work-rate but did little other than give away a few fouls and get booked.
