Louis van Gaal looks set to step up his overhaul of the Manchester United squad by bringing in four more signings and selling up to ten players this summer, according to reports today.

Having fulfilled his World Cup commitments with Holland, the Dutchman officially started work in the Old Trafford hot-seat on Wednesday as he met his new squad and put them through their paces in an evening training session at United’s training ground.

Despite the delay in him taking on his new role, van Gaal has still been having a major say in United’s transfer business so far this summer and was heavily involved in bringing Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw to the club last month.

It looks like the 62-year-old is now ready to step up his plans to re-shape the squad with the Mirror claiming he will bring in four more signings this summer as well as strip back the existing squad in order to give youth a chance.

The newspaper suggests those set to be shown the exit door include Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley, Javier Hernandez, Wilfried Zaha, Bebe, Anderson, Nani, Patrice Evra and Nick Powell, as van Gaal looks to cut away the ‘dead wood’ from a squad that finished down in seventh last season.

The fact that United aren’t in Europe next year means they can afford to have a much smaller squad than in previous seasons and the Mirror believe that van Gaal wants to have a pool of around 24-25 players to choose from, and rely on promoting from within to make up the numbers when needed.

Van Gaal is famed for his faith in youth and the newspaper suggests he will speak with assistant Ryan Giggs to identify the clubs hot prospects, with the likes of James Wilson, Tom Lawrence, Jesse Lingard, Michael Keane and Will Keane all expected to be at the top of the list.

However, while there will be a focus on youth, van Gaal still has plans to bring in more big-money signings and although the Mirror don’t identify which positions he’s likely to strengthen, you’d expect at least one more midfielder and an attacker to be a priority given the players that are expected to be sold.

With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic already out the door, at least one new centre-back is certain to be on the agenda while support for Shaw at left-back is also likely to be in van Gaal’s thinking if Evra completes his proposed move to Juventus.

It’s certainly going to be an important summer at Old Trafford and it looks like it’s going to be the start of a new era at the club. After last years disaster under David Moyes, perhaps an overhaul is exactly what United need.
