Arsenal closed in on the top two after grinding out a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners opened the scoring midway through the first half when Danny Welbeck flicked on Santi Cazorla’s free-kick into the path of Olivier Giroud and the striker kneed the ball into the bottom corner.
The Frenchman doubled our lead just two minutes later as he held off the challenge of Mike Williamson to head home Cazorla’s corner for 2-0 in the 28th minute.
However, Newcastle pulled a goal back just after half-time when Remi Cabella was allowed to break down the right side before teeing up the unmarked Moussa Sissoko for 2-1.
The hosts had most of the play in the second half but we managed to hold out to secure another huge win despite plenty of late pressure.
The victory sees us not only move four points clear of Manchester United but we’re now just one point behind Man City and four off leaders Chelsea – although they do have two games in hand.
