World Cup Winner Keen On Man Utd Move, van Gaal To Open Talks Over €50m Deal
Manchester United are set to open formal talks over a potential €50m deal for Mats Hummels with the defender keen on moving to Old Trafford this summer
The January transfer window is now closed but that won’t stop the newspapers from speculating ahead of the summer so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Mats Hummels….
Manchester United are set to open formal talks over a potential €50m deal for Mats Hummels with the defender keen on moving to Old Trafford this summer, according to reports.
Hummels has long been linked with a move to United but has always remained loyal to Dortmund – where he’s been since joining the club from Bayern Munich in 2008.
The 26-year-old has gone on to make 240 appearances for the German giants and played a key role in winning successive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012.
However, Dortmund have suffered a dramatic fall from grace this campaign and spent much of the first half of the season in the bottom three. Jurgen Klopps men have enjoyed a recent revival but still sit 10th in the table so have very little chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season.
It seems Hummels has had enough as the Daily Mail claim he’s decided to leave the Westfalonstadion at the end of the season and has set his sights on a move to Old Trafford.
The newspaper suggests that although Dortmund are keen to keep hold of their skipper, they will reluctantly agree to sell if he makes it clear he wants to leave but only if their €50m (£36m) asking price is met.
That kind of money shouldn’t be a problem for a club with the financial clout of United and the Mail claim that Louis van Gaal is now urging club bosses to open formal talks to thrash out a deal for the centre-back ahead of a summer move.
United are in the driving seat to secure a top four place and return to the Champions League next season and a top class defender that van Gaal can build his defence around is likely to be the priority this summer.

There aren’t many better centre-backs around than Hummels, as he proved in Brazil where he was a rock at the back and led Germany to become World Cup champions, so he’d be an outstanding signing if United could pull it off.
