Manchester United have reached ‘tentative agreements’ to sign €75m-rated duo Mats Hummels and Memphis Depay at the end of the season, according to reports.
United boss Louis van Gaal is expected to spend heavily in the transfer market again this summer if the club secure Champions League qualification and a dominant centre-back is likely to be a priority.
Hummels has been on the Red Devils radar for some time and rumours in recent months has once again strongly linked the German defender with a move to Old Trafford, while the 26-year-old fuelled the speculation after admitting last week that he’s tempted by a move abroad.
It seems United could now be closing in on his signature as the Metro are reporting that the 20-time Premier League champions have tentatively agreed terms ahead of a €48m (£35m) move this summer.
The signing of Hummels would be part of a big-money double swoop as the newspaper also states that United have an agreement in place to sign highly-rated PSV winger Memphis Depay for €27m (£20m).
Depay knows van Gaal well from their time together with the Dutch national team and the 21-year-old has been tipped to follow van Gaal to Old Trafford after a sensational season in Holland that’s seen him score 25 goals and provide 6 assists in 35 appearances so far.
Who knows how much truth there is behind this report but if true, then it would be €75m well-spent as they would be two superb signings for United.
Hummels is one of the best central defenders in Europe and he’d be the type of player van Gaal could build his defence around for the next five years. He has plenty of experience at all levels of the game and would no doubt be a big upgrade of what they’ve already got at the back, so I’m sure United fans will be hoping these rumours prove accurate.
Depay would be a riskier signing as he’s still young and has to prove he’s capable of producing the goods on a regular basis at the highest level, but he’s certainly an exciting talent.

The youngster predominantly plays on the left-wing so his signing would cast further doubt over the future of Angel Di Maria, with the Argentinean international tipped to leave Old Trafford after a frustrating season following his move from Real Madrid last summer.
