As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd are set to land Memphis Depay….
Manchester United are set to win the race to sign highly-rated attacker Memphis Depay after Liverpool refused to match PSV’s €35m asking price, according to reports.
Depay has emerged as one of the hottest young properties in Europe after a stunning season that’s seen him score 25 goals and provide 6 assists in 36 appearances to help PSV move to within just three points of winning the Eredivisie title.
His impressive form has led to interest from the Premier League with Manchester United and Liverpool understood to be keen on bringing the 21-year-old to England at the end of the season with both clubs holding talks with PSV over a potential deal.
However, it appears United are now set to clinch Depay’s signature as the Mirror are reporting this morning that the Red Devils have agreed to meet the Dutch clubs €35m (£25m) asking price.
That figure is too high for Liverpool, with the newspaper suggesting the Merseysiders aren’t prepared to pay above €27.6m (£20m), and this has paved the way for United to snap up the goal-scoring attacking midfielder.
It seems Louis van Gaal has also been utilising his Dutch connections with the Mirror reporting that the United boss has exploited his friendship with PSV technical director Marcel Brands to ensure the deal swings in his favour.
The duo worked closely together when van Gaal was at AZ Alkmaar and it seems the Dutch boss has made it clear to Brands that he’s willing to meet Depay’s asking price and wants to take the winger to Old Trafford this summer.
PSV have already conceded that Depay will be sold at the end of the season with head coach Phillip Cocu saying last month:
“Of course Memphis will be sold, you can’t stop that, but it’s okay.
“It’s great you can build up a player like him, who breaks through, succeeds at PSV then leaves the club when he’s ready for a bigger step. That’s great.” Cocu is quoted as saying by the Mirror.
It remains to be seen how much truth there is behind these reports but it does appear increasingly likely that Depay will be heading to United this summer. van Gaal knows the attacker well from their time together with the Dutch national team and he handed the youngster his international debut before naming him in his squad for last summers World Cup.

Depay is predominantly a left-winger but is also capable of playing anywhere across the front three positions behind the striker so he’ll give van Gaal plenty of options in attack. However, his arrival would cast further doubt over the future of Angel Di Maria, with the Argentinean international struggling since making a big-money move from Real Madrid last summer.
