German World Cup star Mats Hummels favours a switch to Manchester United over Arsenal ahead of a potential €42m move this summer, according to reports.
As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Mats Hummels favours a move to Man Utd over Arsenal….
German World Cup star Mats Hummels favours a switch to Manchester United over Arsenal ahead of a potential €42m move this summer, according to reports.
Hummels has been with Dortmund since joining the club in 2009 and has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in European football over the past four years.
However, the 26-year-old’s future at the Westfalonstadion is in serious doubt and he’s expected to follow Jurgen Klopp out the exit door this summer following Dortmund’s extremely disappointing season.
The former Bundesliga champions currently sit tenth in the table and have virtually no chance of qualifying for the Champions League next year, so Hummels is one of several key men who are being tipped to look for a move this summer.
Understandably there is no shortage of interest with Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United both reportedly keeping a close eye on the defenders situation.
United hold the most serious interest with Louis van Gaal’s side set to renew their attempts to sign him after supposedly seeing an offer knocked back by Dortmund during the January transfer window.
The Reds Devils have now received a huge boost in their pursuit as the Express are reporting that despite interest from Arsenal, Hummels preferred destination is Old Trafford and van Gaal is ready to meet Dortmund’s €42m (£30m) asking price.
The Dutch boss is expected to be in the market for a new central defender this summer and Hummels would certainly be an excellent signing for the club as he’d be the kind of player United could build their defence around for the next five years.
We’ll have to wait and see how much truth there is behind this report but I’d personally be surprised if Arsene Wenger was prepared to spend around £30m on a new centre-back anyway after signing Gabriel Paulista in January.

I think if the Gunners do bring in another central defender then he’ll be a youngster who’ll be prepared to act as back-up and not an established player like Hummels, so this should leave United free to lure him to the Premier League.
