Chief Confirms Man Utd Have Held Formal Talks Over Deal For €37m Liverpool Target
PSV Eindhoven have confirmed that Manchester United have opened formal talks over a potential deal for Liverpool target Memphis Depay this summer today
As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd have opened talks over Memphis Depay….
PSV Eindhoven have confirmed that Manchester United have opened formal talks over a potential deal for Liverpool target Memphis Depay this summer, according to reports.
Depay have become one of the hottest properties in European football after a stunning season with PSV and he scored his 26th goal of the season with a superb free-kick during a 4-1 win over Heerenveen at the weekend.
His impressive form has led to interest from the Premier League with Manchester United and Liverpool both understood to be desperate to bring the 21-year-old to England at the end of the season.
However, it appears United have now stolen a march on the Merseysiders as PSV technical director Marcel Brands has now confirmed that the 20-time Premier League champions have opened talks over a potential deal.
Brands also revealed that PSG and another unnamed European club have also been in contact over Depay’s situation but warned that they will need to come up with far more than the £15m Tottenham tabled last summer.
“That was last summer [Tottenham’s bid]. Now Depay is worth more than that.
“It’s true there has been contact with Manchester United and Paris St. Germain and a third, big European club. But this time we are talking about bigger amounts of money.
“In this situation we cannot carry on with a club. It’s not the most important thing who we talk to, the player has to choose which club he will pick.
“He will make his mind up soon and we know that we are able to agree a fee with that club.” Brands is quoted as saying by the Mirror
The PSV supremo doesn’t state the clubs asking price but the Mirror claim that United are closing in on a deal worth €37m (£25m) with a further €7.5m (£5m) due if they qualify for the Champions League for two consecutive seasons.
We’ll have to wait and see if those figures prove to be accurate but this news comes shortly after reports emerged claiming that Liverpool were set to miss out after refusing to meet PSV’s asking price, so it certainly seems as though United are in the driving seat if Depay decides to come to England this summer.
And that could be a distinct possibility as the attacker knows Louis van Gaal well from their time together with the Dutch national team and the United coach handed him his debut before taking him to Brazil for last summers World Cup finals.

Depay is predominantly played as a left-winger at PSV but he’s also capable of playing anywhere across the front three attacking positions and can even play up front, so he’d give van Gaal plenty of options if he does end up moving to Old Trafford.
