Chelsea have opened initial talks with Inter Milan over a potential deal for Liverpool target Mauro Icardi this summer, according to reports.
The Blues are on course to reclaiming the Premier League title this season and go into Sunday’s clash with Arsenal holding a huge 10-point advantage over their rivals, but they have had to deal with several injury worries up front in recent months.
Top scorer Diego Costa has been hampered by hamstring issues all season long while Loic Remy has managed just six league starts following his move from QPR in the summer.
Didier Drogba has proven to be a useful target man when called upon but the 37-year-old is expected to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season leaving Jose Mourinho with a hole to fill up front.
Many names have been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent months but ESPN claim that the Blues have now opened preliminary talks with Inter Milan over a potential deal for Mauro Icardi.
The Argentina international has enjoyed an excellent season having scored 16 goals in 29 games so he’d certainly bring with him an added goal threat, while his hard-working approach and physical attributes would also appeal to Mourinho.
However, should Chelsea decide to make their interest official then they could face stiff competition from Liverpool with the Merseysiders also reportedly keen on luring the 22-year-old to the Premier League this summer.
Brendan Rodgers is also expected to be in the market for another forward to help ease the load on Daniel Sturridge – with the England international struggling for fitness for much of the season – and Icardi is believed to be on his radar.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but Chelsea and Liverpool will have to be prepared to dig deep if they want to sign Icardi as Inter are understood to value him at around €40m (£29m).
