Southampton and Tottenham played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at St Mary’s Stadium this afternoon in a result that all-but ended both sides Champions League hopes.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Graziano Pelle capatalised on a slip from Ryan Mason on the edge of his own box with the Italian striker out-muscling Ben Davies to poke home the first goal of the game.
Spurs levelled things up on the stroke of half time when Erik Lamela glanced home a header from a fine Eric Dier cross to make it 1-1 in the 43rd minute.
Southampton then restored their lead in the 65th minute when Pelle grabbed his second of the game with a wonderful header from a Shane Long cross from the right.
However, Tottenham wasted no time in finding another equaliser as Nacer Chadli did well to hold off Yoshida being slotting home from a tight angle for 2-2.
Neither side could find a winner so it ended all-square, meaning Spurs remain fifth in the table but are now six points adrift of Manchester City having played a game more so they are facing a real uphill battle to finish in the top four.
