Chelsea have stolen a march on Liverpool after tabling a €30m offer to Inter Milan for Argentinean striker Mauro Icardi, according to reports.
Icardi has enjoyed an excellent season at the San Siro that’s seen him score 23 goals and provide a further 6 assists in 44 appearances for a struggling Inter side this campaign.
The Serie A giants are desperate to tie the 22-year-old down to a new contract but so far Icardi has failed to agree terms on an extension which has led to speculation over a potential move this summer.
His impressive form has attracted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs with reports suggesting that Chelsea and Liverpool and among those who are keen on luring him to the Premier League this summer.
However, it appears the newly-crowned Premier League champions have put themselves in pole position with the talkSPORT citing reports coming out of Italy that claim Chelsea have now tabled a formal €30m (£22m) offer for the Argentina international.
Jose Mourinho is expected to be in the market for another striker this summer to replace Didier Drogba while they also need depth behind Diego Costa as the Spaniard has struggled with an on-going hamstring injury in recent months.
Icardi would certainly bring an added goal threat if he was to make the move to Stamford Bridge but it remains to be seen how Inter will react to this supposed offer.
If the Italians do decide to cash-in, then I’m sure likes of Liverpool will also step-up their interest, so Chelsea are likely to face stiff competition.

Brendan Rodgers has already confirmed he needs to sign another striker this summer after seeing Daniel Sturridge’s campaign plagued by injury problems while Mario Balotelli has endured a miserable season at Anfield following his move from AC Milan.
Icardi would be an excellent signing for either club but we’ll have to keep a close eye on how things develop over the coming weeks as we approach the opening of the summer window.
