Italian Keen On Old Trafford Move But Man Utd Fail With Opening £10.5m Bid
Manchester United have failed with their opening £10.5m offer for Matteo Darmian with Torino holding out for at least £14m for the Italian full-back.
With the summer transfer window finally open for business, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of next season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd are linked with Matteo Darmian….
Manchester United have failed with their opening £10.5m offer for Matteo Darmian with Torino holding out for at least £14m for the Italian full-back, according to the Express.
I expect Louis van Gaal to be busy in the transfer market this summer as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the title next year and a new first choice right-back should be on the agenda.
The Dutch coach has clearly lost faith in Rafael with the Brazilian international struggling for form and fitness last season which forced Antonio Valencia to fill-in at right-back for much of the campaign.
Although the Ecuadorian deputised admirably, I think it’s safe to say United need a top class, established right-back this summer and it appears van Gaal has his eye on an Italian international to fill the void.
The Express cite reports coming from Sky Italia which claim that United have seen their opening £10.5m offer for Matteo Darmian rejected by Torino with the Serie A club understood to be holding out for a deal worth closer to £14m.
It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils will return with an improved offer that’s closer to that asking price but the Metro claim that Darmian is keen on making the move to Old Trafford, so the player may be willing to try and force his way out of the club this summer.
Darmian has developed into one of the best full-backs in Serie A over the past two years and is now a regular in Antonio Conte’s Italy squad, with 13 caps to his name so far.

He’s predominantly played as a right-back but is also capable of playing as a wing-back, winger or at left-back so I’m sure his versatility appeals to van Gaal as he would give the Dutch coach plenty of options if he was to make the move to Manchester.
We’ll have to wait and see how this all develops over the coming weeks but Darmian would be a useful addition to the United squad and at just 25-year-old, he’s coming to the peak years of his career and has the potential to develop even further at Old Trafford.
